“You're asking this knowing everything,” Maru says. “The pressure of your clan. The scrutiny it will put on both of us.”
“Yes."
“And knowing,” Maru continues, his voice wavering, “That my life will never truly be my own. That as a warrior, I belong to my people in a way Earthlings don’t ask of their leaders.”
“Yes,” Tsurugi says again, softer still.
Maru’s eyes burn. He reaches out and cups Tsurugi’s face.
“You chose me anyway.”
Tsurugi leans into his touch without hesitation.
“There was never a choice.”
⟡ 5 years after the Simurians arrive on Earth, Tsurugi and Maru enjoy a rare morning all to themselves.
They have learned the hard way that, as important representatives for their people, maintaining coexistence demands more from them and their relationship than they'd anticipated.
But this morning is all their own, a time for normalcy and plans for the future.
