    Summary

Xie Lian remembered that there had been a time where rules felt like cliffs.

A time when every misstep seemed to confirm that fate was waiting for him to fail again and again. He had learned to move carefully then, to weigh every action against consequence, to measure compassion against catastrophe.

Fear had settled into his bones so thoroughly that even small choices had begun to feel dangerous.

Hua Cheng dismantled that fear piece by piece.

For years, his husband had encouraged every impulse, every reckless kindness, every softhearted detour that caught Xie Lian’s attention. If Xie Lian wanted to rebuild a ruined hut in the middle of the night, Hua Cheng brought lanterns and timber. If he wanted to cross a mountain to deliver a single lucky talisman, Hua Cheng walked beside him with amused devotion.

Rules had always existed, of course but Hua Cheng simply regarded them as suggestions.

or: Xie Lian ascends as a deity of motherhood and children- and dealing with heaven isn't so bad when you have a ghost king for a husband, and a god for a son.

    Summary

“You built a good life,” Xie Lian said, glancing briefly toward the doorway, where the sounds of that life carried on without interruption. “Meiyun will have everything she needs.”

Yanlin gave a soft, dismissive sound, his fingers twitching faintly in Xie Lian’s grasp as though brushing the idea aside.

“I’m not talking about the house,” he said. “Or the fields. Those will be gone soon enough, or passed from one hand to another until no one remembers where they ever came from.”

His gaze lifted again, settling on Xie Lian with quiet intent.

“No, I’m leaving my family something much more valuable. I’m leaving them something that lasts,”

    Summary

Xie Lian laughed, bright and unrestrained, as Lang Qianqiu stumbled through a turn and barely managed to raise his sword in time to block another strike. The sound of his joy rang clear across the courtyard, rich with delight and completely unguarded.

    Yuelian’s whole body responded.

He wiggled, a sudden burst of happy movement that startled even him. His attention sharpened, drowsiness slipping away as he fixed on the familiar figure of his mother across the courtyard. He leaned forward instinctively, fingers opening and closing as if the distance itself offended him.

Another laugh rang out, bright and unrestrained.

Yuelian wriggled again, a soft babble spilling out of him, familiar and rhythmic, the same half-formed syllables he used for everything that pleased him. He kicked once, then again, excitement building as his gaze stayed fixed on the movement across the courtyard.

    “Mama!”

    Summary

“She’s lying!” Banyue’s voice cracked, high with panic. “She’s greedy and bad! I hate her! We- we should throw her away quickly!”

Xie Lian’s patience broke in an instant.

    “Enough!”

The word cut sharp through the air; even Hua Cheng flinched at the sound of it.

“We are not throwing anyone away,” he said, each word clipped clean. “Meiyun and her parents are part of our family. Do you understand? What you did today was bad, and it hurts me to hear you speak like this.”

The silence that followed had weight. The fire crackled once, a low reminder of how still the room had become.

Banyue’s chin jerked up, eyes wide and glassy. The bravado that had carried her this far cracked all at once.

“I’m not bad!” she cried. Her voice wobbled between anger and something smaller, more frightened. “I’m good! She’s bad! You just like her better than me!”

    Summary

“You know, my mother always said I’d end up with a child as difficult as me,” he murmured, his voice pitched low for the dark. “A punishment, she called it.” He tilted his head to look at their daughter, and his grin softened into something more fragile, caught between amusement and the soft ache of love.

Bozhi’s reply was quiet but steady. “Then I’m glad she was right. I’m glad she’s just like you.” His gaze flicked to Yanlin, earnest in the dim light. “And you were never impossible, Yanlin. Neither of you are.”
