“Ugh. Lotta conditions for something as boring as a visit home.”
“Yes,” Suguru said patiently. It was the halting tone he used whenever he actually agreed with Satoru, but pretended to be better than that, mature. He dipped his head with his eyes shut, rubbing at his neck. “My parents are delicate creatures, Satoru.”

Summary
“Well,” Ace starts. He puts his hands on his hips, rocks on his feet. “What’re you offering, Sabo?”
Sabo swallows again. Ace almost hears it. Shit, it makes him want to pounce.
“Oh.” He shows all his teeth. “I’m low maintenance, promise.”
Sabo shakes his head, his smile lost on his face. Ace’s head gets foggy and hot and his mouth just starts moving.
“T’ tell the truth,” he admits, “it’s… it’s gonna be a tough one to ride out since I haven’t had one for two years– that’s what Marco said. But it’s short notice, don’t really wanna go through the trouble of finding someone I can trust.”
Despite knowing how terrible the heat is going to be– and it’s always worse than imagined– he can hardly think of anything that motivates him less than finding a viable partner out of the blue. The thought has worked like a boomerang, just bringing him memories of Sabo’s hands, arms, lips.

“What was that about? Why aren’t we bringing Sabo?” Luffy demands, chasing after him.
“Quiet–”
“You said brothers shouldn’t keep secrets from each other!”
Ace whirls around and pinches Luffy’s cheek, yanking it out. With his other hand, he deflects the punch Luffy aims at his stupid face in retaliation. Luffy watches his fist fly out to the side and then ropes it back glumly.
“Relax, okay,” says Ace, letting Luffy’s face snap back to itself. “It’s not a secret. It’s a surprise. You like surprises, don’t you?”

“I’m gonna come in!” Luffy calls back. “Are you gonna get the door?”
“No,” Ace answers hotly. He’s near snarling, to be followed up with a tell-off, a barked order, an insult, except it’s all outdone by action, Luffy’s pistol fist bashing through the makeshift wooden walls. Ace curses and sits up.
Flopping his zany, jointless arm around, Luffy yanks the lock, right where he knew it would be. Then he slams the door open with his bright, searching eyes and face-splitting grin. “Ace! Happy birthday!”
And there’s his scent, dirty and tangy and sunny– it’s off-putting, too much. At 13, Luffy is rank with alpha puberty. Not terribly unlike Ace himself, he imagines, which always makes him wonder how the hell Luffy stands it. He doesn’t just tolerate it, he follows it.

Ace is leaving soon, and also in an aggressive rut. Luffy has no problem with one of these things. -

“He's still not dead yet though.”
Ace has been tortured by Blackbeard’s continued existence for too long now. Sabo frowns in solidarity, then offers a smile and the truth, as far as he's concerned.
“If you want it, you’ll do it, Ace.” There's a sort of twinkling at the periphery of his haki, and Sabo stands up. “Though you have more important things to do right now.”
There's that scowl, softened at the edges. Ace is genuinely uncertain. “Like what?”
“Like eating.”

When Ace is injured, Sabo makes sure he rests and eats as much as he can.
