Summary
In hindsight, telling Sirius to "deal with it" was the worst possible idea.
Because Sirius didn't deal with things. He escalated them, with enthusiasm and, apparently, attempted murder.
Now James is sprinting through the tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow, wandlight boundcing off the damp stone, the taste of panic sharp on his tongue.
He is going to kill Sirius. Right after he saves Snape.
