“Lys?” Annette called from the kitchen, a lilt of concern in her melodic voice. Whatever she was working on in there, it smelled amazing—like strawberries and chocolate. “Everything alright? That’s the third ‘drat’ I’ve heard in the last fifteen minutes.”
Lysithea scanned the expanse of their dining room table, taking in what was becoming a regular sight: nearly every square inch of its surface was covered in some kind of magical tome, notebook, or sigil drawn onto a loose leaf of parchment. The books were all ones she’d read before, mostly as a child. Introduction to Fire Magic, A Beginner’s Guide to Runes, The Ether and You. They covered the basics of the basics, concepts she’d mastered over a decade ago. Concepts that were suddenly giving her trouble now that she was without her much-maligned Crests.
After Lysithea's Crests are removed, she has to relearn everything she knows about magic. Luckily, her girlfriend is a professor at Fhirdiad's School of Sorcery.

Her clothes were sopping wet, her makeup was running, and she was ninety-nine percent sure she had straw in her hair. Sylvain, on the other hand, was as well-kempt as she’d expect a man in his position to be—dressed in a pressed silk blouse dyed deep teal, buttoned up to the neck and accented by Gautier’s distinctive burnt red.

“Dorothea Arnault,” Sylvain finished for her, his tone impeccably neutral, giving away nothing.

Summary
Dorothea put on her glitzy red dress, running a brush through her chocolate hair as she prepared to go on stage. During the performance, all of the female singers were required to wear five or six outfits based on the song they were singing. For “Man, I Feel Like a Woman!”, she wore Shania’s tuxedo and lipstick combination; for "I Will Always Love You”, a more muted, down-home look was appropriate.
But for the encore? Only a beautiful red dress and high heels for the leading lady. Especially considering what had happened the night before, Pam Tillis’s “Maybe It Was Memphis” was a perfect song to end off the evening. And the crowd loved it. They loved her voice, they loved her passion, and they clapped as hollered as if she sang to them.
He’d said his name was Sylvain Gautier. She’d never heard that name before – was he French? – and he seemed… pensive, a little angsty and misunderstood like only a trust fund baby could be. He was sexy and mysterious and picked up their tab at the end of the night.
Sylvain and Dorothea meet in Music City, and hit it off. For Sylvain Rarepair Week 2024.
