As a rule, the only joy they found in life was serendipitous, an absent quality in Maruki’s earthly paradise, where all love was preordained, the pattern of every falling snowflake was set, the place of every pyrite star was fixed. Every night since New Year’s, they’d returned to their empty apartment and found their bed made by invisible forces.
Leaning back in the purple-plush chair and glancing at the sign hung behind the bar— in mismatched neon colors, ‘Welcome Love’— they pretended that was the reason Akira invited them here.
