A legend floated up in his mind.
An old story the clan used to whisper to children: There was a White King. A pale god with horns, the son of the goddess of sun and darkness. His people were dying in war, and he rose alone against their enemies. His eyes were like frozen lakes. His hands spilled blood for the sake of peace. They called him the White King—blessed by the sun. But his enemies called him the White Demon. They said he sold his soul for power, that his heart had been burned to ash.
