One thing about Tom Cruise is that he had had aliens in his brain long before there were aliens in his brain, Carol thinks, so probably this was all going really great for him.

Summary
She could pick one.
That was the whole point of being unhived—she was free, she had preferences now, she could reach out and take any bread she wanted off any shelf and put it in the cart and that would be fine. That was what free people did. They chose bread. It was not complicated. People used to do it every day before the Joining and none of them had a breakdown over it.
OR: Post-unhiving. Zosia goes grocery shopping with Carol, can't choose bread, and cooks dinner with a dead woman's recipe.

Summary
“Who better to stand in my stead, to stand as the Crown,” Viserys raises his hands, like he’s about to shock them all with his wisdom, “Than its trueborn heir.”
Rhaenyra preens at the praise, the recognition. “Thank you, Father.”
“And the Queen.”
The smile drops from her face.
OR
[Post-1x06] The King sends Rhaenyra and Alicent to strengthen ties with the North. Alicent lasts two days with a chill that reaches her bones; and then she finds a solution.

Summary
“At least you are consistent with your body horror tropes,” she mumbles, disturbed and intrigued for the wrong reasons all at once. If she lingers any longer on that matter, she might have to wipe off her just eaten breakfast from the kitchen floor.
Zosia says nothing to that. Why would the Venus flytrap be concerned with the fly it has already successfully trapped?

Summary
It was Wednesday now and Helen was dying, evidently—the fall a symptom and not the cause, the doctor was quick to assure them. Naturally, Carol disagreed. No, Helen was not dying. Yes, it was all Carol’s fault; two statements that could only coexist in the beautifully, brilliantly flawed mind of one Carol Sturka—bestselling author, loving wife, masochist extraordinaire.

"Oh, you want me to cuck you with the woman committing identity fraud?" Carol teased, pulling Helen closer.
"That's not cucking," Helen said, as if it mattered, "that'd be if you wanted to have sex with Zosia because I’m a pathetic little worm, and I’m sort of sadly jerking off in the corner."

It’s a little funny, too—in an absolute asinine kind of way—that Zosia may not remember all that knowledge she gained from living in perfect symbiosis with the rest of the fucking world but she can remember the night Helen was sick and left Carol to fend for herself at one of those stupid publishing parties she was always getting invited to. Yeah, she probably shouldn’t have gone for the second Old Fashioned, and she definitely should not have ripped her car keys out of the valet’s hand and flipped him off while doing it, but it tickles her to think Zosia can remember the square root of that night and not four thousand, one hundred thirty.
She risks a small smile. “Oh, that’s sort of—”
“And I hate that.”

Summary
Two years after the Unjoining, she saw Zosia in London, of all places – nearly unrecognizable in her winter attire – bundled up to her nose. But Carol felt her presence like a sawed-off shotgun wound to her stomach. The sight of her eyes peeking over the edge of her scarf, sparkling with mirth as she shouldered the woman she was walking with –
Well, it was fucking devastating.
‘Who is Carol?’ Spray-painted in canary yellow, stood out against the rain-darkened concrete of the building across the street from The Ritz where Carol was staying.

Summary
"Carol knows in her heart that she shouldn’t pour herself another drink. The glass is sticky enough to remind her that she’s spilled the amber liquid over her own hands at least three times, and she’s licked them clean as if wasting a single drop of her favourite poison were a crime. If anyone could see her now, they would deem her pathetic, disgusting, hopeless. The fact that she can still feel the stinging shame of knowing that she’s exactly all those things makes her realize that she’s not drunk enough."

Summary
“I didn’t keep most of the memories. Other people’s memories. I get flashes of big things, births, deaths. Except about you.”
Carol feels the confusion slip onto her face. Nervousness creeps up her spine again. “Me?”
“I know everything that anybody has ever thought about you, Carol. Every memory. Every feeling. Helen. Your ex-girlfriends. Your dentist. It’s like I have a Carol encyclopedia in my head.”
Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

Summary
After the death of her wife, nihilistic and closeted romance author Carol Sturka descends into a stupor of drunken depression which is only compounded when her fanbase finds out she’s a lesbian and erupts in outrage and deems her disingenuous. Her publicist has the perfect solution to rebuild Carol's public image and free her from the "romance slop" genre forever, but Carol isn't going to like it.
She's right. Carol hates it. (Until she doesn't.)

Summary
“Zosia, when I look at you I feel sick to my stomach.” That was not what Zosia was expecting to hear. From the look on her face, it was not what Carol had come in expecting to say either. She had stopped pacing. Zosia just gaped at her, front door still hanging open. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Zosia shut the door and went to sit back down on the sofa. She looked up at Carol, and crossed her arms. “What could you have possibly meant it like?”
Carol sighed, and started pacing again.
“I used you. I hurt you, I drugged you, I blew you up, and I fucked you. I did all of those things knowing that you might still be in there, knowing that you couldn’t consent. I can’t sleep at night because every time I shut my eyes I think about every horrible thing I did to your body and now you’re back, you’re back because I wanted you to be back, I wanted it to be you, and now I can’t even look at you.” True to her word, Carol was staring up at the ceiling. The words poured out of her like sputum.
“To be fair, I killed your wife.”
“That’s not funny.”
“I’m not joking.”

Summary
Carol finds it in the third week of living alone with an unhived Zosia: a New York Times article, “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” An intimacy experiment involving thirty-six increasingly personal questions and, at the end of it, four uninterrupted minutes of eye contact, which sounds fake and humiliating and somehow still not bad enough to stop her.
Carol, obviously, prints it out.
