Summary
Esca and Marcus return to Calleva after all is done, and Marcus has Esca recognised as a libertus when he collects the land grant as his reward. Esca was twitchy and sullen all the way south, but before Marcus can put his plans for the future into action, Esca bolts and leaves him for good. Marcus chooses to stay in Britannia and set up a farm on the South Downs, but his thoughts go ever north to Esca.
Angst, with a happy ending and a glimpse at what Marcus would be like as a father.

“Marcus,” Esca begins, as gently has he can manage, “have you not seen that there is honor and integrity to be found beyond the boundaries of Rome?”
“Yes, of course. You are living proof of it.”
“Then I ask you to trust me when I say that there is pleasure and satisfaction beyond the boundaries of Rome as well.” He tugs Marcus’s head up to kiss him again. “And that I do not need to submit to you in the slightest to have it.”
