Summary
Marty’s in that gulf now. The hallway that chasms down the house, littered with glass and smashed picture frames. Green tendrils crunch under his boots, grey dust and plaster coating his sweat-damp skin. He doesn't belong here, alongside the poison-bright blooms of Rust's knowledge, Rust’s regrets. It's too much for him. He's going to get fucking eaten.
But maybe he wants that. Maybe he wants teeth and blood and something vicious. Maybe this haze of guilt and power is the most alive he’s ever been. Maybe it's allowed him to see. “And that's where you and I... get it wrong. That's the gulf between us... what I expect and what you mean. That what you're getting at?”
“Marty, I think we're in real danger of understanding each other,” Rust drawls, and drops the tickling touch of the plant, resting a palm on Marty’s hammering chest.

Summary
Maggie Hart knew she was going to fuck her husband’s partner seven years before she did. The near animal awareness of the fact didn’t start when she watched Rust mow her lawn, plain tank damp with effort. It started with her screen door.

Summary
Audrey’s still not entirely sure which she prefers: her mother’s soulless, cookie-cutter McMansion or her father’s piece-of-shit shack.
The screen door swings open, clanging against the side of the house and Rust Cohle, of all people, steps out onto the porch.

Summary
Maggie coughs up something that sounds suspiciously akin to a laugh and Rust’s gaze swerves to find her lightly tracing her temple with a thumbnail, mouth screwed up into a sheepish smile that looks like kids, you know?
He doesn’t.

Rust and her dad, Rust-and-her-dad, Macie can’t stop seeing it, the little ways they glance at each other, or don’t glance at each other, know each other well enough not to need to, to be assured innately that the other’s still there.

“I’m ambivalent toward my sustained existence on a good day, and I ain’t exactly been having a lot of those since leavin’ the hospital.”
“Rust…”
“That don’t mean I’m going to run my truck off a bridge anytime soon.”
To Rust’s credit, he makes it a month and a half before bringing up this whole ‘not supposed to be here’ business again.

Summary
Marty told Rust he'd have a place to stay after he left the hospital, and he meant it. He hadn't necessarily been expecting a week or two of recuperation to turn into a permanent kind of roommates situation, but Rust seems to have no intention of moving out, and Marty has no intention of kicking him out, either, for reasons he can't quite manage to articulate.
Which is to say, Rust has always been kind of prescient-- but Marty might not have guessed just how on the nose his joke about getting engaged was.
