Summary
Adam Parrish has spent the last decade of his life at the Aglionby School for Boys, the latter five years as a teacher. At twenty-two, feet restless and mind yearning for more, he takes a position at The Barnes, a sprawling estate in Galway, as lush and green as the woods where he spent his childhood. His pupil is strange and her father, when finally he appears, stranger.
Adam has been poor and obscure all his life; he had hoped, with time, that he might resolve the first of these difficulties at least. What he had not planned for was the possibility of happiness, or its potential costs.

“Are you sure you want to be out here right now, standing so close to a superstitious bastard at midnight on New Year’s Eve?” Ronan smirked and swirled the whiskey in his rocks glass as he held Adam’s gaze.
“Is that what’s behind this tradition? Superstition?” Adam watched Ronan’s eyes drop to his mouth.
“Fuck if I know,” Ronan said, eyes still fixed on Adam’s mouth.
“Would you kiss anyone standing next to you right now?”
“I wouldn’t stand next to just anyone right now.”
Adam and Ronan meet at a New Year’s Eve party. Sparks fly.
