I wanted ART to come back online so we could watch Sanctuary Moon episode 412 together and it could argue with me about whether spacetime-fuckery alternate universes counted as canon. I wanted it to come back online so I could tell it Holism put an aquarium in Three's chest and wasn't that totally deranged. I wanted it to come back online so it could bully me into figuring out what my fucking problem was.

“It’s an invitation to go to a university and talk to some bots, what’s to make of it?” I said. Then the obvious reason behind Bharadwaj asking occurred to me. Oh, great. “Don’t tell me you’re actually thinking about going?”

“I’m considering it,” Bharadwaj said. “I set my own schedule these days, and I would very much like to speak with the bots they’ve been working with, if nothing else.”

I sighed. I like sighing at appropriate moments, and I think I’m pretty good at it at this point. “There are bots on Preservation.”

“True, but the Pansystem University of Mihira and New Tideland has one of the most advanced programs in this section of the galaxy for the construction and study of higher-level bots!” Bharadwaj said, making one of those hand gestures she liked for emphasis.

AU after Fugitive Telemetry. Bharadwaj, Mensah, and Gurathin take a trip to do some research and rapidly uncover more than they'd bargained for. Why did Murderbot tag along on this low-risk research trip? Listen, don't worry about it.

    Summary

I’d locked eyes with Mensah, looking like that. My energy weapons had deployed, without my awareness or direction. My targeting systems had identified her and Bharadwaj, quite insistently, as direct and immediate threats.

Maybe this is just a temporary, dangerous, system glitch, and a hard restart will fix me. I’ll just restart, comb through my code, do some debugging, find the corrupted files or whatever, and then I won’t indiscriminately murder my most trusted humans.

I should know by now to always assume the worst.

In which SecUnit is having some survival threat…response errors. And some…’targeting its humans’ malfunctions. And some…blackouts when restarting. I’m sure it’s fine.

ART was staring at me mutually. That's not the word I meant—it was the one that it shouldn't have been able to do because it was already its own captain. Anyway, ART was staring at me like it wanted to stage a hostile take over, depose all my c-level executives, and replace them with its own.

The one good thing about ART not being around was that I could ignore its instructions not to do anything stupid.

A bundle of thick cables ran from deeper within Three’s chest into what I knew were its power cells. I picked up the cable trailing out of my energy weapon, disconnected one of Three’s, and plugged mine in.

Murderbot and ART follow a distress signal and find Three at the bottom of an abandoned mining installation.
