Summary
As their journey to Erid nears its end, Grace allows himself to feel hopeful about the future. The Hail Mary has survived far longer than she was ever intended to, Rocky is practically vibrating with excitement about returning home, and Grace has more or less managed to stave off the worst effects of malnutrition. Things seem to be going well.
Until he wakes up one morning with a fever and a harsh cough and is granted a stark reminder of just how fragile his human body truly is.

“There’s, um, two clinical manifestations of beriberi. Wet and dry,” he explained. “Dry damages the nervous system. Numbness in the hands and feet, difficulty walking, confusion, all that good stuff.”
Rocky would never understand how Grace could talk about his body deteriorating so casually. His wry smile every time the taumoeba came right back out of his mouth, the blood left on his toothbrush after he brushed. “I’m leaking again,” he’d laugh. Humans could laugh without sounding happy, Rocky had learned.
Grace gets beriberi on his way to Erid. Rocky copes.

Afterwards Rocky reassured me that it is pretty common for pebbles to earn their first nicks and cracks at that age. Their outer shell isn’t fully developed yet and not quite as hard as that of an adult. He proudly showed me various indents and hairline fractures on his own body, telling me about how he got them in his youth during adventures with his friends or just messing around.
It’s a sign of growth, he told me. A sign of getting older and maturing.
Not a big deal. Happens all the time.
I believe him. Tori was in good spirits afterwards. Their crying was more because of the shock and the scare, not any actual pain. We finished the rest of the day without any further incidents and then I wished them all a happy holiday and returned to my home and got into bed.
Where I stayed for the next eighteen hours.
