The guards dragged the struggling deer demon to dais in the middle of the room, and one flew up to fasten the chains. One end were linked to the ceiling, the other to the cuffs around his wrists. They stretched the demon’s arms upward, so he would not be able to hide anything with his hands. Then they adjusted the length; the demon could kneel, but not sit down. Chains around his ankles made sure he could not close his legs completely; everyone could get a clear view.
“Scholars and students,” Lirael, the High Healer said. “Today, we will see something few have seen. The beasts down in the pit of Hell copulate and breed, but we rarely see the results. Until today. Our warriors captured a demon heavy with child.” She put her hand on the deer’s swollen belly. He tried to jerk away, but the chains held him tight. “We have waited and cared for him till this moment. Now we will all witness the birth of a demon-spawn.”
Polite applause rippled through the room.
The demon looked around at the angels watching, tears welling in his eyes.
Demons may be little more than animals, but some angels study them still. When it is announced that a birth will happen, many curious onlookers flock to see.
