“I know how much you two used to love a good interrogation,” Gomez boomed, entering the room from behind Enid and patting her gently on the shoulder. The moment his hand made contact with her shoulder, her vision clouded.
She let out a long wheezing cough, doubling over with her hands on her knees as the taste of smoke flooded her senses. A hearty laugh sounded next to her and once again it was Gomez’s voice that she heard.
Enid stood straight and realised she was now standing on a porch overlooking a vast expanse of land. She wanted to ask Gomez where they were but in that moment she realised she had no control over her body. It wasn’t like she was frozen, it more felt like she was gazing through a window into her own life but with none of the discomfort something like that should bring. Instead she felt calm and, for the first time in her life, like she belonged.
