Before Mike left for school the next morning, he looked positively giddy in his new outfit and ‘masculine’ cologne. Karen almost made him pose for a picture because of how handsome he looked, but she didn’t want to risk losing the mom points she’d worked so hard to earn the night before. Karen was really starting to gain confidence in her assumption about it being for a new girl. She was vaguely aware that Mike had a little girlfriend in the past—some puppy love situation—but obviously, he had his eye on someone new now.
What threw her for a loop, however, was when Mike carefully selected one of his new outfits and spent twenty whole minutes in front of the mirror just to hang out with Will.

Karen knows Mike is hiding something from her, and she's awfully confident in her assumption that it's a new girlfriend.

“Why,” Will breathed heavily against Mike’s neck. He pushed on Mike's hand, rolled his hips down to try to press his fingers deeper. “Why did you stop? I— I’m really close,” he sighed. “Mike, please—”
“You have to be quiet,” Mike whispered. His own breathing was labored and sporadic.
He nudged Will's face, nosing along his jaw. Will looked up at him, his eyes wild; there was almost no green left.
“Can you be quiet for me?” He asked, pressing his lips close to Will's but not fully kissing him. “Will?”
“Yes,” he gasped, nodding. “Yes— just please keep going.”

Will shakes his head. “No, I mean. I mean I— I do like girls, just not like you. Not like that. I mean.” He groans, frustrated. “It’s not just that I don’t like girls—”
“You like…boys?” Lucas offers, and Will’s head snaps up in surprise. “Um, not to step on your moment, and I’m proud of you and all, but…Will, I already knew that.”
“You— you knew?”
“C’mon, man, you’re one of my best friends. Yeah, I knew,” Lucas says. Relief hits his bloodstream like a drug—of all the somethings, this is the best possible outcome. “You like Mike, right?”
Will stammers, jaw dropping. “Wh— what? No! I don’t— I don’t like Mike. I mean I…I did, I used to, but I don’t anymore. I swear.”
“Dude, it’s cool,” Lucas says slowly. He smirks. “I mean, I don’t get why you’d go for Mike when you have a much better option right here—” He does a gratuitous shimmy, and Wills snorts a laugh, “But I guess there’s no accounting for taste.”
