It’s been less than two months since John Kramer’s death. Less than two months since Amanda and Lawrence pinned every remaining loose end a little too tidily on Detective Mark Hoffman. He fit the profile and had the benefit of being the only face any surviving victims had seen—except for the woman Amanda had locked in a shotgun collar face to face.
“She’s a doctor,” Amanda says before thinking better of it.
Insult to injury. Adam scoffs. “Woooow. And now you’re blowing up my spot. Everyone’s a critic when I want to screw the hot married doctor, but when Mandy does it…”
“She’s also a mom,” she adds apologetically.
He swears under his breath. “All the best things happen to the worst people.”

Summary
He approaches the stone wall circling campus, built more for show than to discourage escape, ages of neglect crushing it low enough to give a clear, tempting view of the road just beyond it. Empty, usually, no one there unless they're dropping off their son for beginning of term or picking up what's left of him at the end of it — but on December 13th, just past midnight, there's a car idling on the shoulder as promised. Nicer than any car he's been in, from what Todd can tell. A Cadillac, based on what Charlie wrote. As if Todd would know.
