“You can lead the investigation, Kaveh. Just say the word.”
“How is this even allowed? I’m a prime suspect!”
“With a legal counsel, you’re permitted to use any means necessary to clear your name,” Alhaitham explained. “Or so the Matra guidebook claims. I’m sure that includes a formal investigation. It’s guaranteed. Tedious, maybe, but the court will allow it. With enough persuasion.”
“Then why bother?” Kaveh asked quietly. “If it’s so tedious, why bother doing this?”
Alhaitham blinked. “Apart from the fact that we’ve had sex before and I’m simply that nice?”
or, the one where Kaveh (investigator) becomes a murder suspect and Alhaitham (soon-to-be-Grand-Scribe) helps clear his name. Or tries to, at least. It’s… not exactly as smooth-going as Alhaitham initially hoped.

Dear Kaveh,
With the changes occurring all over Sumeru recently, I believe it is time to also make some changes within. On behalf of the Akademiya, I would like to formally commission you to be the main architect for the Akademiya’s next major renovation project. This would include creating new offices and adding a new wing dedicated to the arts. Your direct supervisor for this project will be Acting Grand Sage Alhaitham.

NahidaAlhaitham scanned the letter over Kaveh's shoulder quickly, interested to see how he would react. Kaveh’s initial smile only seemed to grow as he read on, but then it quickly dropped. “Wait. Wait. What. What.”

Kaveh nods miserably. “It destroyed the foundation, and the entire building went crumbling a month before it would’ve been finished. Dori wanted to give up on it,” he is rambling now, words slightly slurred by the alcohol on his tongue, “but Alcazarzaray is — that Palace is not allowed to fall before I die.”
“So you paid for it to be rebuilt,” Alhaitham says. It is not a question.
“It was either pay for it,” Kaveh mutters, “or die before it could finish falling. And I don’t want to die.”
Kaveh's skin is made of porcelain. Alhaitham, coincidentally, learns how to sculpt.
