It was like a switch, the way all awkwardness traded itself for concern. “What happened?” he asked sharply, eyes zeroing in on the hand that, now not held to Potter’s chest, was dripping blood onto the floor.

Reluctantly, with a great deal of complaining, Q goes along as backup. Except that Bond isn't the only possible target on this mission, and as the suspects start piling up thick and fast, Q might just find that he lost the moral high ground long ago.

Summary
Q is told that he works too much, by many, many sources. So, isn't it grand that 005 walks through the door just as he's getting scolded about it and invites him on a chaotic evening out with half of the most dangerous people in the UK? What is even better is that Q hasn't spoken to Bond for multiple weeks, since the last mission that crashed and burnt. Q learns more about himself than he does any of his agents on this night out - they're all very predictable to him anyway, much to their dismay. Will Bond and Q finally talk it out, or will their silence stretch on until the rubber band snaps?
Or...
I started writing this as a little tiny ficlet drabble, but it overtook me and now it's like a plant I'm trying to control, though I'm pruning the leaves yk, and now it's taking shape and is more like a bush with foreshadowing and internal monologues and character depth, haha, I could never.

There was a lamentable lack of warning signs, that day—no augury to be divined from the grounds in the terrible coffee he’d had on the plane; no spilled salt or broken mirrors at which to so much as quirk an eyebrow. No, it was all perfectly ordinary: Bond was back from a mission in Micronesia, with a fresh set of stitches over his left eye, and a set of more or less demolished gear to drop off with an irritated Quartermaster. But after Q had tutted over the gear, he’d paused, pointing to Bond’s stitches, and uttered something unthinkable.
“Did it hurt, Bond?”
