“I just meant— your bed,” Ed tries to amend. “You made it up for me. Us, I mean.” He motions with the hand he’s not winding up with Stede’s. “Two pillows.”
Stede’s heart launches into his throat, because he’d actually entirely forgotten that point. He’d made the bed himself this way since returning to the ship; it hasn’t been long, but— Ed’s been here. He’s had hope the entire time, even if he wasn’t verbalizing it.
Well. Wasn’t always verbalizing it.
“You made it up for both of us,” Ed comments into Stede’s semi-panicked quiet. “How’d you know I’d say yes?”
The truth comes so easily. With Ed, now, it feels like everything hard is easy, even if it’s still hard. “I didn’t.” He repeats, a bit firmer, “I didn’t know.”
Ed’s fingers, tangled with his, squeeze.

Summary
Stede can’t help crying out in pain, in the next beat, finally giving in when an instinctive sound comes up. It’s loud, and the crew goes dead silent around him.
Stede doesn’t even notice. He’s just trying to breathe, skin tugging painfully, when a door bangs open at the opposite end of the ship.
“What the fuck was that?” Ed demands from afar, voice heard easily over the crash of the sea around them. “Was that Stede? Where the fuck is he?”
“Oh, no,” Lucius says quietly.
“If you jump overboard, babe, I swear I’ll come back for you,” Black Pete promises him.
or: lucius accidentally gives stede a flesh wound, and ed loses his mind like they're not all pirates.

“I’m sorry if it’s weird, you know,” Stede whispers. “Getting terms and conditions from the crew.”
Ed sighs. “I don’t mind, really. Kind of nice to be taking orders instead of giving them for once.”
Stede hums thoughtfully.
“I never knew you felt that way,” he finally replies softly.
Ed hugs the pillow tighter. “Yeah, well. Can get exhausting. Hard to keep that up.”
“But you’re so good at it!” Stede fires back with conviction. “Everyone just falls in line when you’re around.”
Ed chuckles to himself. “Everyone but you, maybe.”
