Aerion finished his joust match as before: he killed the horse, injured Ser Humfrey’s leg, and got banned from the tournament. But he was too tired from his father’s lecture to visit the commoners’ markets, so the next day the tournament continued.
He sat in the highborn seats and watched the boring joust.
Now, it wasn’t so boring—when the wooden lance of some stupid inexperienced huge hedge knight came flying toward his father and uncle’s seats. Both were chatting with some lord and unaware until Aerion abruptly pushed them out of danger. The lance struck deep into the prince’s side. Blood was everywhere.
And that stupid knight? He now owes him a massive debt.

Fate (or the gods, or some bored Valyrian demon with a taste for jokes) spits him back into the world generations earlier, reborn as the twin brother of Prince Jacerys Velaryon, son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
