Their situation soon lays itself out in front of him with horrifying clarity, and Newt does Hermann the favor of laying it out for him as well: there are two ‘The Next Step’s, both in the general South Florida area, both in the same outrageous price range, both counseling centers. One specializes in workplace relationships. One specializes in marriage.
They are not at the one that specializes in workplace relationships.
(OR: Newt and Hermann are sent off to mandatory workplace counseling for a week after Human Resources gets tired of dealing with them, quickly realize someone's screwed up along the way, and decide to play along anyway for the free vacation, as one does.)

When Hermann wants to take Newt's class to pick up a pesky hanging gen-ed requirement after he is informed that his undergraduate degree in math was technically one credit short because his advisor twenty years ago had neglected to inform him that he technically didn't have what he needed to graduate (and while the amount of work experience and graduate degrees under his belt means that he'll be fine to continue his current position, Hermann refuses to walk around with an incomplete Bachelor's Degree), everyone is all up in arms.
No, the chair of both departments say, Newt will go too easy on you. Everyone knows that he looks at you like you hung the sun. That he would walk over hot coals just to make you happy.
But the thing is that while yeah, of course, Newt would do the second thing, and both him and Hermann are well aware of it, what else do you call deciding to move to England and its endless rain for Hermann, Hermann would also do that for Newt, and yet he was still able to be impartial when Newt took his class.
"You do understand that Dr. Geiszler would rather pull out his own toenail than give me a grade that I don't deserve, right?" Hermann asks.

“Listen, dude, it’s the end of the damn world. I’m the best in my field. You either let me fuck around and find out, or we don’t get any samples of kaiju tissue before it disintegrates-”
“Would it kill you to have some professionalism?” Hermann gripes, because he’s incapable of being anything but the biggest party pooper (despite the fact that once, writing letters with him was the very harmony that Newt lived his life by, before Berlin sent that song crashing like drums smashing into the ground).
Newt opens his mouth to respond, but Hermann cuts him off like the dick that he is.
“Fine,” Hermann sighs, “If you shan’t do the smart thing and take a break until the steroid cream can actually do its job, then I'll have to do the safe thing for you."
Hermann slides on a pair of gloves along with one of the never used lab coats, which is unfairly hot, who gave grumpy Hermann Gottlieb, he of the lesbian undercuts and WWII-era-tortured-scientist style, the right to be that hot in something so mundane.
(When Newt finds he's allergic to the new antidote for kaiju blue, he's resigned to his work slowing down.
But when Hermann helps with dissection, Newt's crush becomes impossible to ignore.)

“Dude, you have a fever,” Newton frowns, pushing the back of his hand invasively into Hermann’s temples. Hermann scowls and unsuccessfully shies from his touch, swatting him away. “I do not.”
“You do,” Newt props himself up on his elbows to get back in Hermann’s face, the annoying twat, wrapping his fingers around the back of Hermann’s neck, which he knows Hermann is helpless against.
“If I’m so feverish then get away from me,” Hermann snaps at him, utterly incapable of the bite he wishes his tone to have.
“No way,” Newt insists, pouting a little. “My baby is sick and you want me to leave him? That’s sick, Hermann, pun not intended.”
Or; sometimes it takes a bit of a fever for Hermann to allow himself the affection he craves.
