Lan Sizhui, the letter reads. I hope this does not interrupt your studies too greatly - it is only that I fear your Hanguang-jun will not appreciate this tale, but I must share it with someone, before this old man’s bones become filled to the brim with words that trees do not bother with. I tamed a fierce corpse on the road to Qinghe, some days ago. Last night, a little girl came charging down the road, covered head to toe in mud, and clung right to my legs. Ah, Sizhui, if this humble senior may be so bold as to call you, for a moment I could have sworn it was you. She cared for my robes as well as you did, back then—which is to say: not at all.
Lan Sizhui, in no particular order, comes of age, dispels a ghost, gets a cousin, contemplates family, matchmakes his parents, and copes with strange, lingering dreams.
