Summary
In a deviation from expectations, Clark and Bruce meet for the first time not as Superman and Batman, and not as reporter and billionaire business owner, but as some version of themselves somewhere in the middle of all their respective identities.
Clark nods, pushes his glasses back into place, smiles. It's sweet. It's comfortable. Bruce feels a sense of peace — there's no need to rush this. He steals one last kiss, then walks back to his car.
He remembers to text Clark later, when he's back at the manor and before patrol, letting him know he made it home safe and wishing him a good night.
He sees Clark again, unplanned, unexpected, Saturday night.

After the Rift, Clark keeps moving. He's a bit lonely, a bit less trusted than he was before, a bit optimistic about a budding new friendship - relationship? He's determined not to mess things up, but he will. Things never work out just right. Meanwhile, Bruce throws caution to the wind and lets someone in for a change. He thinks it's fine, until he makes eye contact with him from across the room and feels the cool knife of betrayal slide between his ribs. It only gets more complicated from there.

The cycle repeats. It's been like this for too long. Not just weeks, but months. Too many months. Clark can't properly remember a time before this emptiness. If he thinks about it long enough, he knows this happened before — but never for so long. Never so severe. Just, sometimes. When he was a teenager. Sometimes he felt empty and alone. He'd like to say it started when he found out he was an alien, but, honestly, it's always been there. Maybe it is because he's an alien. He doesn't know. There's no one he can ask.

Summary
When Clark is targeted and kidnapped, Lois and Batman come to the rescue. They get him out in time to save his life, but not in time to spare him more trauma. The first fic follows the kidnap and rescue and includes some themes of sexual assault; it's the whumpier one. The sequel follows Clark and friends through the aftermath; it's the angsty one. There is plot, hurt, comfort, angst, relationship troubles, and more.

"What do you mean?"
"Aren't you dating him?" Dick tilts his head with genuine curiosity. "He should be here taking care of you. I thought Superman helped people, especially his boyfriend."
"What-- we-- we're not..." Bruce starts to stammer, not sure how to even answer this.
"Are you and Superman in a fight?" Dick presses, eyes big, voice dropping into a hushed whisper, "Because when me and my best friend at school fight we say mean things, and then we say we're sorry."
