  Wilbur didn’t fail. Doesn’t, didn’t, didn’t use to, at least—

   

  The big red ‘D’ scribbled at the top of his paper stares up at him from where he’s all but crumpled the test in the empty car seat beside him. He can’t stand to look at it. Hasn’t been able to look at anyone since it was neatly placed on his desk. Perfect white paper, pristine, with an ugly, red imperfection.

   

  He’s been sloppy lately, he knows. Too content. Too comfortable. Careless. Stupid. He squeezes his eyes shut and tries to ignore the stinging.
