Summary
Eddie hears the gunshot before he feels it.
He’s kneeling on achy knees before the pulpit when the chapel door slams open. He only manages to twist his body around to see the visitor when he hears the familiar, earsplitting pop.
It takes another second for him to realize that the bullet is lodged in his stomach, which is when the excruciating pain floods his system.
A shocked, rough gasp leaves his lips before the intruder flees. He lifts a shaky hand to the source of the blistering pain and it comes away wet and red.
Oh, God listened.
OR
Eddie makes a deal with God to stop punishing his family for his mistakes and to punish him instead. Then, Eddie gets shot.

Summary
Eddie is close to whining when he gets a spark of an idea.
Eddie tilts his head down, and stares up at Buck in a way that he knows makes his eyes look bigger and more pleading. He juts his bottom lip out a little in a slight pout. This has secretly become his move when he is in a debate with Buck as a sure fire way to win.
Eddie is already internally celebrating his win, and thinking about going back to bed with Buck, when Buck yelps and jumps a few steps backwards away from him. His hands fly up to his face, and he blocks his eyes.
“No! I know what you’re doing!” Buck protests, shaking his head wildly
OR Buck has figured out that Eddie uses his eyes to win arguments, but he really wants to win this one.

Summary
Loitering a few doors away from Eddie’s house in the evenings had become a new part of Buck’s routine for the last three weeks. The mandatory dinners notwithstanding, Buck would turn down Eddie’s offers to hang out but end up on South Bedford afterwards anyway.
Every evening when the sun was just peeking over the horizon, and the grey in the sky began to flood in, Eddie would pull the curtains to the side and switch on the porch light.
He balances his cravings in this way. The time spent in his car watching the house helps to soothe the yearning he feels for Eddie, the part of him that is constantly left wanting. Then he gets to go home and let the pills wash away the longing and the fear that sits in his chest ever since New Mexico. He also gets to sleep dreamlessly. He wakes in a start because of the shrill tones of his alarm and not because of the phantom strain of the binds they used on him.
OR
Every day, Buck watches Eddie switch his porch light on, waiting for Buck to come in. Every day, Buck goes home and takes painkillers to numb the pain instead of going inside.

Summary
"No, you didn’t do it because it was the right thing to do. You did it to throw yourself recklessly into danger because you’re fucking addicted to it!”
The words strike Eddie like a blow. It’s a year ago again and they’re simmering in rage. Buck wants to fight. And Eddie has never been known to back down from a fight.
“So what?” Eddie spits out petulantly and Buck pushes himself away from the counter and takes a few haunting steps towards Eddie.
“You jumped off a fucking bridge,” Buck reminds him with an accusatory finger.
“You’re just jealous that I did it before you could,” Eddie replies meanly and a frustrated noise bubbles out of Buck’s throat.
“You have a death wish, Eddie. How the fuck do you expect me to just sit around and watch the person I love the most in the world try and kill himself?”
“Then leave me!”
OR
After Eddie runs into a burning house without any protective gear, Buck and Eddie finally talk about Eddie’s death wish.

When Chim said that there was a firefighter competition for charity in Nashville, Buck had been the first to volunteer. Eddie had offered himself so quickly after that.
