Summary
“I heard you two were expanding your family! Another little one at Durand. We were so excited when we saw the enrollment paperwork.” She clasps her hands together. “Theo is an absolute joy. Let me show you what he’s been working on.”
Expanding your family.
Buck opens his mouth to redirect — it's a reflex, the correction sitting right there on his tongue. This isn’t the first time they’ve been mistaken for more than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together.
It’s right there, polite and practiced: Oh, we’re not actually—
But suddenly Eddie’s hand is on his back. Not his shoulder this time, but lower. A few inches lower than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together would justify.
Eddie’s palm presses flat against the base of Buck’s spine, fingers spread wide like he’s anchoring them both to the same spot.
“Thank you so much,” Eddie says. “We’re really proud of him.”
Or: The totally platonic act of raising not just one, but two kids with your straight best friend.

“Shh, no, don’t talk. I just got a response, finally. From the others. They’re coming, Eddie. You’re going to be okay, just stay awake.”
The elevator hadn’t moved yet. They were still trapped in no man’s land, still stuck too far for them to easily get to Eddie and save him. Buck could try to keep faith, but Eddie knew better, and so Eddie had to say it before he lost the chance.
“Buck, listen, I—”
“Eddie, don’t. No goodbyes, okay? Please?”
“I’m not going to die without saying this, so shut up and listen.” Eddie managed to rasp out.
Buck, to his credit, shut up and listened.
OR -
Buck and Eddie are stuck in the elevator together as Eddie bleeds out from his stabbing. Truths are realised, secrets are spilled.

“I think Buck is pregnant.”
Hen slots her glasses back onto her wrinkled nose and says, “What, can you smell it on him?”
That shakes Eddie out of it a little. “What? No, his birthmark.”
The wrinkled nose is paired with an eyebrow raise, and Hen tilts her head a fraction. “What about his birthmark?” she asks slowly, like she’s talking to a child or a mental patient.
“It kind of…glows?”
Hen, his current captain, his former partner, one of his best friends, looks at Eddie like he’s lost his mind.
“Boy, if you don’t get out of my office so we can go home.”
or, Buck is pregnant. Eddie just doesn't know how to tell him.

Summary
Theo plops himself onto the closed toilet seat, drowning in his Spider-Man robe while Eddie blow-dries his hair. He leans his face into Eddie’s stomach, humming to himself and fiddling with one of his bath toys that he’d rescued before being plucked from the water. The tub slowly drains, the bathroom is humid and nice-smelling, and there’s the weight of a toddler against him. Eddie isn’t just falling asleep, he can feel the stress of the day melting away.
He sighs. Theo tips his chin to look at him and sighs back, flaring his nostrils like they’re two tigers communicating in chuffs.
“I’m happy that you’re here, Eddie.”
“Yeah,” Eddie says. He aims the blow dryer down the back of Theo’s robe, making him giggle. “Me too, kiddo.”
or, Buck needs some help putting Theo to bed. Eddie has his back.

“Your friend Diego. Were you in love with him?”
Not a muscle twitches on Dad’s face.
“Dad, it’s fine. You can tell me.”
Dad gives him a nod so small, he barely notices it.
Christopher figured. But it’s nice to have the confirmation.
Next order of business, then.
“Are you in love with Buck now?”
Dad shuts his eyes, pained.
When he reopens them, he gives him another nod.
Figures.

“I wanted you to hear it from a friend,” Maddie says.
I don’t want to hear it at all, Eddie thinks, curling into himself as if that can shield him from the words that she has to say. I just saw him, he thinks, remembering the way Buck smiled at him in his dream and wondering if that’s the only way he’ll get to see his smile again.
(or, Maddie calls Eddie to tell him some news. He jumps to conclusions.)

It’s not ideal, being dead. He can’t bake, he can’t take a shower, he can’t go to work. And he can’t tell Eddie he loves him.
It occurred to him in the too-fast flash of a second it took to fall 48 feet into the fiery subfloor full of rubble, glass, and rebar.
Oh, Eddie.
Not ideal at all.

“How’re you really feeling?” Eddie asks.
Buck sighs, tips his head back against the pillow. “Sore. Shitty. Kind of hungry.”
“They have mediocre applesauce. I’ll get you some.”
Buck’s hand clamps around Eddie’s wrist so fast Eddie doesn’t see it move. “Don’t leave.” His voice is small, tight, and it burrows between Eddie’s ribs.

Now, Buck’s backyard and home are bustling with the 118 family – the younger kids running around in various levels of Easter Best, the first generation watching with fond amusement, the parents sitting back with drinks and letting the older kids play unpaid babysitter.
It’s nice. It’s loud and a little chaotic and someone’s probably going to get a skinned knee before the end of the day and it’s nice. Eddie wants for more days like this.

Summary
There’s a nudge at his hand, a careful tap that finally makes him look up for the first time since they got there. Evan wipes his face hastily, trying to sniffle up the water in his eyes before anyone can see. He doesn’t want to cry, but sometimes he just can’t help it.
Because that’s his brother. That’s his big brother, in a hospital bed, with dark smudges under his eyes and a really bad cough that keeps getting worse, but he’s smiling at Evan like it’s all going to be okay.
All Evan heard was the machine. He counted the sounds, hoarded them, and wished he could just sit there and listen to the proof of his brother’s heart beating forever.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep –

Daniel needed more. More surgeries, more transfusions, more time. Evan couldn't give that to him, but maybe, years later, thanks to Eddie and Christopher and Bobby, he'll realize. He was always enough for Daniel.

Summary
“Buck, I don’t want to upset you,” he said. “But can you feel this?” Eddie’s eyes gestured down at his arm. Buck followed along the bandages, expecting to see some sort of spot of red or maybe an odd-angled turn. Instead his heart rose and fell too fast as he realized that since they’d been talking, Eddie hadn’t just had his hand on his shoulder. His other was delicately wrapped in Buck’s exposed fingers, starkly white even against the bedding. Buck tried to move them, wanting so badly, even with all this and even as much as it could give him away, to curl back.
They didn’t move.
……
After a spiral, Buck attempts the unthinkable. Eddie helps him recover, but his lasting injuries present new challenges that jeopardize his career. Now he has to get his mental health in order, face potentially leaving the firehouse, and all while being completely and totally in love with his best friend.Series

Summary
Eddie wakes up with someone’s arms wrapped around him. Which is very concerning because he went to bed alone last night, like he’s done every night for over a year now.
He scrambles out of the bed, completely ungracefully, landing flat on his ass in a room that is unmistakably not his own. His heart hammers in his chest as he tries to make sense of it all in his just woken state. He peers over the mattress, to the person that was holding him, and he’s pretty sure his heart gives out all together.
“Maddie?”
She yawns from the bed, not opening her eyes, curling further into the pillow. “It’s too early, Howie, the alarm hasn’t gone off yet.”

Buck freezes and his voice raises an octave.
“What? No. Of course not.”
“Buck, it’s just nonsense, okay? I know it’s kind of freaky, but you just gotta ignore it. I already talked to Hen and Frank about it. They both said it’s nothing to be concerned about and that it’ll probably pass soon.”
“Easy for you to say, man. You’re not the one getting woken up about it in the middle of the night by your boyfriend speaking in tongues.”

Summary
“Did I do something?”
Buck stops and turns his head to look at him, confused. “Huh?”
“Look, I can handle it. I'm a grown man. I'd rather know.”
Buck frowns, holding out his hand to stop Eddie. “What are you talking about?”
“You haven't…” Eddie clears his throat, suddenly feeling his face really, really hot.
Buck’s frown snaps a little bit, his lips barely quirking up at the corners as he takes half step closer to Eddie. “Say it.”
“I…” Eddie’s face is on fire, his mouth is dry, and whatever courage he’d found within him has evaporated and disappeared. “I… can't…”
Buck nods, grinning. “Well, that answers your question.”
Eddie’s eyebrows shoot up. “So you're, what, punishing me?”
There’s a moment of stunned hesitation before Buck laughs brightly, blue eyes glued to Eddie’s annoyed face.
“Is not being kissed by me that much of a punishment?”
Yes. But he doesn't say it.
His face does though.
Or: Buck refuses to kiss Eddie. He's only kind of crashing out about it.
