Summary
Megumi raises his voice over Nobara's grumbling. "Yuuji."
Yuuji hums that he's listening, attention focused on where he's brushing off stray flecks of curse goo from his sleeves.
"Yuuji, would those be the same lockers that we put our stuff in earlier?"
Yuuji goes very, very still. When he finally does raise his head to look at Megumi, his eyes are wide, painted with the realization that he has just made a grave mistake. His eyes flick over to where the near end of the lockers has been reduced to a wrecked mass of metal that groans under its own weight.
"Uhh…"
megumi and yuuji's belongings are inadvertently destroyed on an overnight mission trip. luckily, nobara's just bought some new clothes.

There’s a hand on the side of his face, tilting his head up enough to meet the eyes that are staring down at him so intently. Itadori’s eyes, Megumi’s brain helpfully supplies after a moment. Big, brown, worried eyes with pupils blown wide beneath a furrowed brow. Itadori’s hand is on his face, and he’s looking down at Megumi, and he looks worried.
What’s he so worried about?
Another rush of flushed heat pours through his torso, his abdomen feeling as though it’s being shredded from the inside out, and Megumi involuntarily squeezes his eyes shut, cut off from staring back up at those familiar, soft, pretty brown eyes.
Why is Itadori so concerned? He looks better when he’s happy. Unburdened.

An Inumaki is not a person, not an individual, not a collection of thoughts and emotions and words that build up on tongues but never, never come spilling out. An Inumaki is a tool, a single brushstroke of a larger painting, a mindless, pliant cog in the great machine of their clan’s legacy. There is nothing more important to Toge’s family than gaining power, and even if there were something more important, it wouldn’t be Toge.

“Time to go,” Megumi confirms, softly. He reaches out and takes hold of Yuuji’s wrist, wraps his fingers around it in a light but pressing grip, and the second he starts walking, Yuuji readjusts so they’re holding hands instead. He squeezes, and Megumi squeezes back. Neither of them tense or pull away.
Megumi leads him onto the train after Nobara, and despite his unresponsiveness up until now, Yuuji follows—follows off the platform, follows down the aisle. Like a dog at their heels, he will follow them wherever they go, do whatever they tell him to do, no matter what. Megumi just has to take it, the knowledge that he is someone’s lighthouse just as the others are his.
Yuuji shuts down entirely in the aftermath of a mission, and it’s so unlike him it starts to scare his friends. They stick with him through it, and take care of him together.

It’s like this— maybe Megumi has made mistakes in the past, errors in judgement, moved purely on impulse in a way that had a domino effect on Yuuji’s life, dragged him into a world of curses and violence. Maybe if he had the choice to go back, Megumi would be faster, smarter, make better choices and avoid every hospital in Sendai. But he can’t. What’s done is done. What he can do is be there for Yuuji now, when he needs him, so that he’d never have to look over his shoulder and find himself alone.
Just like he said he would.“Okay,” Megumi says, relaxing his hands. He places them on the tabletop in front of him like he’s got nothing to hide, and stares straight ahead at the stove. “If you need help cleaning up your undercut, I can help you trim it. If you want.”
Yuuji goes maddeningly silent for a moment, long enough for Megumi to regret even offering, until he blurts out a delighted “Really?”
Two months after Shinjuku, Megumi helps Yuuji cut his hair.
