“I honestly don’t get why anyone would hate you,” Behrad says. The way he looks at Lex when he says it makes Lex feel warm and strangely afraid at the same time.
“But we clearly need a plan to deal with those constant threats you’ve been living with,” Behrad continues unexpectedly. “You can’t go back to that. That’d be literally like throwing you to the wolves.”
The curious mixture of emotions he’s just begun to feel stretches out in Lex’s body, making him shiver. What they’ve been talking about has been his reality for longer than he can remember. Escaping it has never been an option; changing it even less so. The simple fact that somebody apparently feels responsible for achieving such an inconceivable change for or with him can’t lure him in like this. False hope is deadly for him, he knows this. He shouldn’t yearn so desperately to share the reality Behrad is presenting him with. It’s a very bad idea, just like everything else Behrad represents.
“You’re impossible,” he says. Instead of skeptical, it sounds fond, and Behrad smiles.
