"Mr Robby," Dennis says breathlessly once he's close enough. For once, Robby has to crane his neck to look up at Dennis.
"Yeah?" Robby rasps.
"I want to go with you," he says. "To Pittsburgh."
Nebraska, USA. Ex-doctor Michael Robinavitch has been driving for hours when he stumbles upon an abandoned church surrounded by tall grass. Inside, he finds a troubled Dennis Whitaker - a man with nowhere to go and no place to call home.

“I’ll give him an ultimatum.”
Robby's eyebrows tick up. “That’s rather unorthodox.”
“I believe this patient could benefit from unorthodox treatment,” Whitaker says between gritted teeth.
“What would that ultimatum be?” Robby tilts his head, amused despite himself.
Whitaker says, “I’ll quit medicine.”
After their shift ends, Dennis finds Robby on the roof.

Shaking his head, Robby tells him, “I don’t want to hurt you.”
That’s all you ever do, Dennis doesn’t say. Instead, he looks up at Robby through his lashes, still blurry, still crying. “Dad, please,” he whispers, resting his palm on Robby’s bulge. “Please fuck me.”
The night before Robby leaves for his sabbatical, he fucks Dennis hard and fast.

Summary
He slows in the middle, he thinks, eyes following the current beneath him. He can see Liberty Bridge in the distance, downriver. The jump doesn’t look that high from here, with the distance, but it must be. High enough, at least. Christopher Sinclair was missing one of his shoes when EMS brought him in. Maybe it’s still floating down there, somewhere, or sunk to the bottom with the glasses Dennis's mind has convinced him that Christopher Sinclair had.
There were nights that I thought about jumping off one of them.
It’s Robby’s voice, pulled from the back of Dennis’s brain, clearer than any of the things actually happening around him. A walk after a bad shift. A view of the river, of the bridges lit up. And Robby, back early from his sabbatical with no warning, confessing to Dennis the thoughts that scare him most.
Dennis blinks, and he’s across the bridge. He doesn’t look back.

Dennis goes home to his family after a difficulty shift.

Summary
He always looks nervous. Less so than he used to, definitely, but there is nothing Whitaker’s growing professional confidence can do for his face. He just looks like someone who is about to faint dead away with anxiety at all times, eyes huge and hair waving timidly over his pale forehead. When he smiles, he looks almost… he looks different, but he’s not smiling now. He’s staring at Robby as though he thinks one of them is about to explode.
[In which Whitaker takes a risk, Robby is all over the place, and I deal only in happy endings]
