“God, I’m so angry at you!” Dick laughed, voice manic as he tossed his phone beside him on the concrete, on speaker, and brushed a hand wildly through his hair. “It’s always Jason this, Jason that’. Do I just not matter to you anymore? Did I ever? I don’t speak to you for months. Months Bruce! And you still have the audacity to ask about him first thing before even asking how I’m doing when I finally want to talk to you. Do you even understand how fucked up that is? How bad that hurts?"

Summary
He corrals them out of sight and into a cab, by repeating the murmured It’s fine we are OK like a mantra and doesn’t let go of Bruce’s hand as they walk up towards the imposing shadow of Wayne Manor. He rarely takes this path by foot, especially nowadays, but tonight he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Bruce to trudge on alone.
Jason and Bruce get cornered by a mugger one night, at an alley. Jason thinks they are fine, until Bruce collapses behind him, and they deal with the aftermath when they are both feeling more than a little raw.
Alternatively, Jason guards Bruce as fiercely as Bruce guards Jason.

“What am I missing?” Jason asked, his brow furrowing and letting annoyance creep into his tone. He didn’t care for his father’s mind games.
“Jay, lad,” Bruce began, quietly, and Jason wanted nothing more than for his father to just spit it out. His hand twitched, as though he wanted to take Jason’s, or maybe put a reassuring hand on his shoulder like he used to. He didn’t.
Jason wasn’t sure whether he was glad or disappointed.
“What?” He exclaimed with a huff, falling back onto his pillow to glare at the ceiling. “It can’t be that bad.”
The silence that followed only served to unsettle him more.
“When you were injured, it was as a civilian.”
Or alternatively; Jason wakes up in the hospital after an accident, the doctors have identified him as the long lost son of Bruce Wayne, and he's forced to not only figure out how to navigate his (very public) personal life, but also the broken relationship with his father.

He longs for something else, something other than this, someone other than this. Someone who cares. It drives him across half of the world; from America to Beirut to Ethiopia, looking, ever looking.
He finds her.
He finds her, and it's the best moment of his life. He feels, for a moment, that everything will be okay, that he will have a family, that he can be fulfilled, complete.
When she goes, he follows. He finds that she's in trouble. He finds that he wants to help her, save her.
(Saving is what Robin does. What a Robin should always do.)
And he tries, he tries, but he can't save her. Can't save himself, when she turns, when she leads him to death—
She can't save him, either. But she does try.
They die together.

Dick leaned back on the other side of his couch. The room was dark, cold. Usually at this time right now he would have been at the manor. First it had been for Alfred’s birthday, and then when Jay had joined, both of theirs.
Not this year. No one felt up to doing anything, and Alfred had sounded so sad over the phone when he had called to wish him a happy birthday.
“Happy sweet sixteen Jaybird. I got you something, it’s just a little charm. I’m gonna put it on your grave when I go next.”

Summary
Jason dreads the moment when Bruce starts talking. He’s probably trying to figure out the angle, sorting through his internal spreadsheets. They’re going to analyse the past year in as few words as possible, or discuss the treatment, to give Jason the illusion that he has any control over it. Or maybe they will get back to the topic of how Bruce simply cannot do what Jason wants him to; the judge, jury, and executioner lecture that Jason never really needed, because deep down he knows that his cries and requests were selfish. Childish, even.
But the silence stretches. It starts feeling more like peace.
“I love you,” Bruce says, and that’s not code for anything.
