The stranger finds himself in an office. It must be an office, surely, even if the hundreds and hundreds of books and ticking clocks are disruptive forces, painting an incongruent image of what he remembers an office is supposed to look like.
(What he remembers, barely, is the image of tatami mats and the distinctive sound of wind blending in with bright-sounding bells. And the everlasting swaying of the sea, up and down, urging him to go further west, west west west, to those foreign lands so far away from the bustling port of Shanghai.)

“Excuse me?” Ema inquires, a bit irritated now. She would like to ponder her current predicament in peace, thank you very much.
Kay sighs dramatically, one hand pressed to her cheek now. “I’m leaving in a few hours and you’re miserable. I mean, I am too, but that doesn’t mean we can’t see the bright side of this situation.”
“Alright then, humour me.” Ema leans back into her chair, crossing her arms. “What’s so good about your departure and me having to go back home alone to my shared flat which, as you know, doesn’t even have proper heating, only to look at my desk knowing that I need to keep studying for an exam that I will probably fail anyway?”
or, Kay is leaving and Ema is feeling down. Thankfully, her girlfriend is always ready to cheer her up.

“When dead whales sink down to the sea floor, they become a whole”—Grace waves his hands in a big circle and draws out the word to emphasise his point—“ecosystem for a tonne of bottom dwelling creatures down there.
“To them, it’s the equivalent of an oasis falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a desert. It can feed them for decades, and gosh, the microbes that can be found there. I would love to study a whale fall...if they weren't at the bottom of the ocean. Eugh.” He shudders dramatically. “If I never have to go in a submarine, I will die happy.”
Eva wonders if the whale died happy. Or, at least, happy to know its death would bring life to so many. Surely that was a comfort when faced with the end.
