One day Yuki was working at a high end restaurant but then his life changed when he got a phone call from his sister that their brother had committed suicide. “Am I…am I still a Formula One driver?”
Max didn’t know how to answer that. Yuki had been testing with him and Isack in Bahrain, but testing was all they were doing. The season hadn’t even started yet. And technically, Yuki didn’t have a seat on the grid anymore.
His eyes were watery now, shiny from Max’s hesitation. His chapped lips wavered and the room dampened with his scent. Max covered his hand with his, unable to find the words to speak.
“Why are you here, Max?” Yuki mustered, through a shaky whimper.
“Because I’m…I’m your emergency contact. I came as soon as I heard. I’ve been sleeping just over there, on the couch.” Max swallowed.
“You’re my emergency contact?”
“Yes.”
Yuki blinked through falling tears. “Where’s Pierre?”

Ten years.
2025 marks an official decade of Max Verstappen driving in Formula One, and after the near-disaster that 2024 seemed to be, the break was much needed. Max adjusted his glasses, a sigh already passing his lips as he adjusted himself on the couch, legs thrown onto Charles’ lap like they belonged there – they did.
“Ah, yes, Cheri, make yourself at home,” his boyfriend says jokingly, Charles’ hand coming to rest on the bones of Max’s ankle, the warmth of him grounding and comforting. Home.
