Summary
In a reality where our modern world is also home to Gods that are powerful, plentiful, and very, very present, Dean Winchester is a fuck-up. A nobody. A failure only employed by the good grace of his uncle and still alive because his best friend won't let him drink himself into oblivion.
Then, one morning, a handprint appears on his shoulder. A Godmark.
He's been chosen.
Dean can't help it. He laughs. "Cas. Dude. What lives? Seriously, look at us. You're barely a functional adult and I couldn't get much more messed up. Trust me, okay, there's zero chance being chosen by a God, for whatever fuckin' reason It has in mind, does anything but help us get our shit together."
"I hope it helps." Cas says solemnly. "I hope this all goes exactly the way you hope. I hope you get everything you want, Dean. I've always hoped that."
Sparkly warm affection wells up in Dean's chest. "You giant sap," he teases as he shoves their shoulders together. "I hope you do too, man. You deserve it. But you know it's not about what you or I want. It's about whatever this God wants from us now."
"It shouldn't be," Cas sighs, looking away. "That's the problem."

Summary
It's all Charlie's fault. (Or: Charlie buys Dean panties for his birthday and everything becomes unhinged from then on.)
No, Charlie isn't willing to let Dean get away birthday-free like everyone else (ie: Sam and Cas) does. Rather, she gets that steely, determined look about her and declares that she will ensure he gets a big, gross, gooey party with speeches and presents and 'making him feel special' or she will die trying.
The irony is Dean needs no help feeling special. He feels special pretty much all the time.
Especially fucked.

Summary
Cas is acting weird. It's Dean's fault (obviously).
Of course Sam is the one who figures it out.
"God, Dean, you just have to touch everything, don't you," he's bitching, gesticulating pissily over the basket of brackish-stained laundry he just dumped on Dean's bed. On top of the pile is the neat carved figurine Dean found in the antique shop. Dean's not sure what this has to do with Cas yet, but apparently it went through the wash in his pants' pocket and now a bunch of Sam's flannels are ruined? That's what he's gleaned so far.

Dean Winchester, coffee shop owner, would really like to know why these two weird dudes keep showing up every day, both in his place of business and in his goddamn dreams.
"Hot stuff for the Hot Stuff, coming right up." Dean grabs the correct cup sizes and Sharpie. "Names?"
Trenchcoat and Flannel, who've fallen into a heated—if low and whispered—conversation, both turn their heads and blink at him with the most complicated expressions Dean's ever seen.
"Castiel," Trenchcoat grunts. Dean scoffs and writes CAS in all-caps on the side of his venti. Flannel turns out to be a SAM. No surprise there.
"And, uh," Sam starts hesitantly, as if testing each word, "what's- your name?"
"Dean," says Dean. "And if ya want my number too, just let me know." He winks, and Sam gulps, eyes wide as a deer in a pair of headlights. Cute.

There isn't really a height difference between them, but the older man is thicker, heavier with age and muscle and time. He's broader and probably stronger, if not for the injury. Dean could outrun him, if he had to, but to where? His own front door?
He reaches out a hand to touch Mr. Novak's belt, presses a finger to the silver buckle there.

It's Summer in Sugar Run, Florida. John has disappeared to God knows where, and Dean is doing whatever he can to make ends meet and keep food on the table.
