It is still dark outside, and he isn’t willing to rouse a seemingly restful Erik for his own sake, but he thinks he might just cry. The only thing more frightening than his own failure is not being able to protect his brother the way he should. It scares the shit out of Lyle– how uncontrollable it really is.

Erik looks up at him and a wave of sadness washes over his face, emulsified with something else, something that Lyle cannot define. “Nothing important. I just..” he starts, and then closes his mouth. “I want to be good, Lyle,” he swallows. “Please, teach me how to be good.”
