Pomni had only just started theater class, and yet she was already getting into trouble because of that stupid Jax. The rabbit’s words were nothing more than a poor improvisation, but for a reason she didn’t understand, they had hurt her as if they were real. Maybe he really meant them? Hard to tell: Jax never stayed serious on stage for very long.
She hated his behavior. She hated Jax. She hated his ridiculous rules that he imposed on everyone, as if they were an obsession. She had only one desire: to go against them, just to make him angry.
And what if, without meaning to, she found herself at the center of his obsessions too?

Summary
Jax is definitely not beating himself up after his argument with Pomni. Why would he, when he's already told her and himself he doesn't care about anyone in the circus? He's determined to keep his actual feelings about the circus members behind the door of his bedroom, all contained to a singular corkboard on his wall.
Pomni is determined to continue being friends with Jax, even after their spat, because she knows he was lying his way through it. She's respecting his space as best as she can, until him ignoring her makes her break entirely. Can she find a way to make them be friends again, and find a way past the walls he's built up around himself?

What were the stages of grief again?
Denial, Jax remembers. He knows that one. It’s the first on the list, the one that clues people in that it’s developing grief in the first place. Not that he’s grieving. That was silly. And a straight up delusional take on his situation. He doesn’t grieve.
Cartoonish purple rabbits don’t grieve.
The dead can’t speak, the guilty don’t deserve to. Pomni has Thoughts™ and makes it Jax’s whole problem.

Pomni blinks up at him, uncomprehending.
“Your… ears?”
Jax nods, swallowing back the bile building in his throat.
“Pulling them hurts?” Pomni guesses.
“You… he pulled them until I–” he sucks in a breath, letting it out in a shaky exhale. “I'm not… It's like a costume, Pomni. He tore it off.”

It took one snoop in Pomni's little diary to figure out she liked him.
But it took a week of triathlons, food fights, bodyguards and multiple emotional breakdowns to realize Jax liked her back.
Alternatively, Jax is an idiot in love and makes it Pomni's problem.
