Based on THAT scene of Siege and Storm. Alina falls asleep in tears in The Darkling's chambers after having seen Mal kiss Zoya. She wakes up to sweet and soothing caresses. She thinks Mal has come back to her, but she's wrong.
Or: Alina wants Aleksander even after what he did and she's on a guilt trip because of that. Aleksander is terribly jealous of Mal and pathetically in love with her but he sucks at expressing it.
Also important: The Darkling has Ben Barnes' puppy eyes and you want to forgive him even though you shouldn't.
