Max turned just in time to see the boy from before—the one who had been helping Lewis move in—running towards him, panting heavily as he caught up. His backpack was falling off one shoulder, and his face was flushed.
“Bonjour,” the boy greeted, switching to heavily accented English. “Je m’appelle Charles. You are Max, yes? We go to the same school.”
“Uh, yeah,” Max replied, caught off guard by the rapid switch between French and English. He’d expected the boy to sound more British, like his father, or even German like Sebastian.
“Do you want to walk with me?” Charles asked, his voice hopeful. “My dads told me not to walk alone.”
Max hesitated. He glanced down the street where, in the distance, he could see both Sebastian and Lewis standing, smiling and waving at him and Charles. He bit his lip, looking up at the apartment complex, wondering if his dad was watching from the balcony. Finally, he nodded.“Okay.”

Max wrung his hands and shifted from foot to foot, staring at the blanket like it had offended him somehow. “I-” He faltered. His voice became small and quiet. “I don't know how.”
“‘Don’t know how’ to what?”
“Build a nest.” He was avoiding Daniel’s gaze, blue eyes firmly fixed on the floor between his feet. “I’ve never…I spent so long pushing who I am away that now…Daniel I think that I'm broken.”

Daniel is obsessed with Max's scent. Max won't build a nest. Daniel buys him a blanket and Max has a breakdown about it that leads to him going into heat. -

Daniel wakes up to the sound of Max hyperventilating. It’s still dark outside, the room lit only by the glow of the kangaroo nightlight. He looks at Max, who’s sitting up in bed. “Max?”
Max gasps and starts repeating, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” over and over. He sounds terrified.
Max was little when they went to sleep, but Daniel’s pretty sure this is adult Max. However, he has no idea what’s going on. He moves closer to Max, but Max cowers away from him and brings his hands up to protect his head.
Fuck. Maybe another nightmare? Daniel slowly sits up and his leg touches a wet patch.
Oh, fuck.
Or: Maxy wets the bed when Daniel's in the bed too. Max doesn't handle it well.

Years later, the grid decides he’s too violent to be accepted, until the small wrongness of Max's actions begin to stack, and someone finally looks long enough to see what’s been hiding in plain sight. This is about the shape of a childhood you can’t outrun, and the terrifying and fragile beginning of Max being met with more instead of less.

But that still doesn't mean Max is pathetic. It only means he has a few things that could be corrected, like the issue of his height being fixed by having him on his knees, or the issue of him having too much to say being fixed by preventing him from using words at all.
Dogs don't walk on two legs. They don't talk, either.
Max isn't a dog.
Yet here he is, on his knees, collar in mouth, hiding in the hallway and wondering what would be the best way to approach George.
George buys a collar as a joke. Max takes it seriously.

Summary
In 2015, when Max first joined F1 as a fresh-faced rookie, the pack shut him out because of the wrongness and temperament that existed on him like a second skin. In 2025, Max has mellowed out and the pack, specifically the rookies, begin coming to him. Whether they are tired, angry, hurting, or unsure, Max never says no. He doesn’t weigh the risks of involving himself with a pack that doesn't claim him; he only registers that someone needs something, and that he knows how to give.
Layered on that, Max has a secret that the pack doesn’t know nor understand but they begin to circle it. It lives in the way he goes still when certain voices drop, in how his eyes glaze when someone gets too close, in how he never asks for anything and how every so often he'll disappear and return as a ghost.
OR: The 2025 rookies get attached to Max very quickly, pulling him into grid pack dynamics. Unfortunately, Max was cut from the pack in 2015 by Lewis and he still doesn't accept him. Now that Max is getting closer again, the grid is starting to notice something is very wrong with him.
