Summary
Sam just stands there in the penthouse suite with blood on his face, neck, and hands, his eyes lowered, as Dracula’s Daughter hotel security and Lestat’s shark of a lawyer start clearing out the traumatized band members and groupies. Sam’s ears are still ringing, and he feels exposed. He longs for the reassuring cover of his helmet, but he’d lost track of that in the hall—he’d promptly tripped because of it, and it’s not as if he’s ever been what anyone would call elegant in a brawl. Sam feels someone take him by the shoulders and steer him off to one side.
“Hey, man,” Daniel says. “Thanks for having our backs in a pinch. You okay? You don’t look okay. Can vamps go into shock?”
“I’m not in shock,” Sam protests, but he is a bit. There’d been no guarantee that he’d survive upon being recognized by Lestat.
“How far behind us are the spooks? No texts yet,” Daniel asks, releasing Sam so that he can check his phone. “Security won’t like—”
“Sam!” calls a voice that both Daniel and Sam recognize, its timing both uncanny and welcome.

Summary
Armand exhales. He turns his back so that Petronia can fix his hair as Paige had once done.
“Should I stop them if they wake before you return?” Petronia asks. “If they try to follow?”
Hesitantly, Armand shakes his head. “If I don’t return, then they deserve to find out why.”
Petronia gathers strands of Armand’s hair from each side, twists them into place, and secures them with the comb. “You’d have them see…”
“What remains,” Armand whispers, studying his reflection with a restrained nod. “The aftermath of…whatever carnage. Yes, Petronia, I would.”
Petronia squeezes Armand’s shoulders encouragingly, their expression in the mirror strained. Fac quod debes in monte, deinde ad nos revertere.
Nihil tibi promittere possum, nisi me conaturum esse, Armand replies, touching Petronia’s broad hands before extracting himself from their grasp.
[Two years is a long time to follow a series, across two volumes. Thanks to all of you who followed this one 💙]

“We need to rethink the one part of this we do have,” Petronia says angrily as they walk down the flagstones toward the house. “I can’t let you—”
“Sam and Rashid are participating in this endeavor of their own free will.”
“No. Your Daniel, being who he is, got a bright idea when he learned what Rashid could do. And then my boys, being who they are, felt obliged.”

[Sam] approaches, peers into the box, and his expression tightens. “Raglan just couldn’t let us have a nice holiday before we ship out next week, could he? What has he done?”
“Sam, let’s take this upstairs,” Rashid says, shifting the crate to one arm. He hustles Sam onto the lift. “It was…partly a briefing on Paris.”
“I’ve briefed you on Paris,” Sam snaps, folding his arms. “Many times. We know it’s going to come up if Louis ever picks the Daniel scab.”
“When he picks it,” Rashid sighs, punching the number for their floor, “because part of my job is to nudge...tensions in that direction.”
“You can say his name in front of me,” Sam mutters, although he sounds anything but happy to be talking about it. “I won’t break.”
“Armand was the topic of conversation with Raglan,” Rashid says, inclining his head toward the hall when the door opens. “After you.”
“That was low of him,” Sam seethes once they’re back in their room and Rashid has set the box on the desk. “Speculating on my trauma?”

“Who’s this handsome creature?” asks the vampire with bleached hair, winking at Sam before he pulls Eglée in tight. “My replacement?”
“Oh, no, I—” Sam stammers, making a hasty gesture of refusal at Eglée “—don’t, not that way, I mean—” He cuts himself off with a shaky breath, staring at the floor in defeat when he realizes that both Eglée and her companion are laughing at him. “Don’t misunderstand me,” he huffs self-deprecatingly, because in for a penny, in for a pound. “I’m happy enough to make friends with the ladies, but I wouldn’t know what to do with one if you dropped her naked in my lap with a neon sign’s worth of instructions the size of the Moulin Rouge. Satisfied?”
“Not a ladies’ man,” says the janitor in the brocade dressing gown, with a piss-taking air. He’s a Brit; just Sam’s luck. “Got it.”
“Santiago,” Eglée says impatiently, “this is Sam Barclay. Sam, this is one of the good-for-nothings I warned you about.”
“A neon sign’s worth of instructions,” Santiago says thoughtfully. “The size of the Moulin Rouge, even. Are you a writer?”

Summary
The plan is that this series will continue (beyond the dualogy of stories currently present in it) and contain the very first of my properly TVL-based Sam/Rashid stories. The first couple stories in it, "History Is a Sequence of Fires" and "Les choses sauvées de l’enfer," establish what happened during Paris-era for Sam and how he and Rashid got together during S1/S2 era in the present day. With those establishing details out of the way, I'm hoping to be able to move forward with them as an established couple against the backdrop of whatever revelations S3 brings.
