The girl is still smiling when you look back up at her; a thin little thing made of lipstick eating at her mouth.
“Why am I here, then?” you ask. “Was I killed?”
The thing greedily bites into her mouth, licks its lips, loses all its etiquette: “Well, you must have wanted to die.” This is a lie and so she says it quickly, lets it draw blood from her tongue and congeal into meaning. It is pleasant, for a few seconds. She is full stomached, her cheeks red with the most delicate blush.
This place must keep her fed, and quite happy.Two country mice meet on a beach beyond time.

Summary
Denji wanted to run away with a girl who killed him. Or, well, he wanted to run away with someone who loved him. Liked him. Denji would have rather stayed in the city, but it wasn’t safe—that was true—and Reze said she liked him with or without the chainsaw coming out of his head. This might be a betrayal to Miss Makima, and maybe to the top-knot, and maybe even to Power—but Denji wanted to feel the butterflies from before. He wanted to pull more flowers from his mouth if it meant Reze would smile even the tiniest smile. So, here they were.
(or: denji and reze manage to get halfway across japan. it’s almost far enough.)

That Ratio cared about him at all was not a surprise. For all his sternness, there was a wellspring of incomprehensible devotion in him, a doctor’s instinct for the damned. The surprise was how much Aventurine wanted him to. How he’d slipped and lost his footing the moment he’d felt like someone would catch him. Aventurine couldn’t afford that comfort, and Ratio couldn’t afford the trouble Aventurine would bring him, inevitably, the distractions and the nonsense and all the reckless gambles.
Aventurine had cheated fate enough. And Ratio had other battles, more worth his while.
