Summary
Arlow folds her arms across her chest. “What do you want to hear?”
“That I am wrong. That in my grief, I mistook the shape of your knife in his skin. That your magic is not the touch that stopped his heart.”
Nothing about the accusation bothers Arlow. She gazes down at Lenore, steady and unmoved. It makes an eerie, uncomfortable picture; this is the stranger she met so long ago, not the wry smile and patient comfort of the lover she has known. “You want me to lie to you?”
After Lucanis falls on a contract, Lenore tends his body— and recognizes the source of his wounds.

It is a funny thing, the way time and circumstance trade barbs, and twine, and shape each and every fate.
Two roads diverged in an Antivan wood—
And yet reunited, where all roads in Antiva do.
Nova de Riva and Marisol Cantori, through the years.

“We might as well move on. He’s never going to ask.”
Teia reaches over Marisol’s shoulder to sweep her thumb along Viago’s cheek.
Considering. Calculating.
“Perhaps he won’t.” Something catches in her concession, something sly and impish. Something that curls in Marisol’s core like honey spooned into hot tea. “But I will.”
When Viago can't (won't), Teia puts Mari on her knees.

She drags a sheet about herself. Gathers her hair over one shoulder and wraps it around her knuckles. "It's just a fact. Don't tell me death suddenly bothers you?"
"Your death."
"Hm?"
"Not a nameless, theoretical concept." His walking stick is propped against the armoire; he grips the snake-wrapped handle like he can choke an escape from its silverite throat. "Your death. That is what we're... considering."
Or: Addie has made peace with her Calling and Viago has not done that.

“The only thing that could pardon you in this moment would be if we walked out, right now, with no intent to come back.”
“The only thing?” Something devious glints in Viago’s eye, and something other than hunger pools at her core. Her awareness catches on the weight of his palm against her leg— even before his fingers tighten, before they slide up the length of her thigh.
“Perhaps—“ her grip tightens imperceptibly on her wine glass; her breath stills in her lungs “—perhaps not the only thing.”
Viago and Addie attend a dinner party.

“I could stop, if you—“
“No.”

When a strange eluvian manifests in the Crossroads, two Rooks catch a glimpse of how things might have been different.
“What,” Jackdaw balances on the tension stretching between them like a high wire, “is going on here?”
“Why don’t you tell me,” Addie points her dagger at the Fang, “seeing as you have that?”
“You seem to know a great deal about it.”

Summary
When her childhood friend fails to appear at her thesis defense, Vanthi and Lucanis return to the Lighthouse to find what's become of her.
“We’ll find her,” he murmurs. Vanthi swallows. Nods.
“Of course. It’s so easy to lose time here— she’s probably upstairs, in a sea of research notes. Happened to us all the time as apprentices.”
But Rosamund isn’t upstairs.

Summary
Before House Cantori can make their play for Seventh Talon, Teia needs one more thing: her Spellblade.
She bears no grudge for that. Orders were given, and she carried them out willingly— eagerly, even, for the light it sparked in Teia’s eyes. But this—
This means something else.
Teia lifts the weapon, blade against palm, and holds it out, hilt-first. “Come with me,” she says. A simple invitation. “In this, be mine.”

“Rosa was here the other day, did you know?” And there is— a bite to her words. Of course he didn’t know, but now he does, because there is no one else who steals his shirts and wears them about all of Antiva as if she has rights to every piece of him.
“And she what,” he musters a bit of dignity, even as Teia laughs quietly above them, “walked back across Treviso, half-naked?”
“You say that as though you don’t think she would.”
No one teases like the Crows of House Cantori; no one suffers them like Viago de Riva.

Summary
They paid a heavy price to save the world. In the aftermath, Viago takes issue with Rook's grief.
Fingers close around her throat, killing the sound. Her skin feels oversensitive, every point where the leather presses into it burning like a match head.
“Don’t,” Viago warns. “You’re better than that, we deserve better than that, from you. We are not a dirty handkerchief for you to dry your tears on. After everything—“
His thumb slides up the column of her throat, pushes her chin back. “You are better than that, Rook. Do better.”

“That has nothing to do with this.”
“Doesn’t it?” Marisol picks up her phylactery and turns it over. “For all that you resent Fulgeno, he is part of you. Part of your past, part of the reason your present is what it is. As the Circle is part of mine.”
She traces the runes with a blunted nail. “Why not eradicate the parts of our past that hurt? That were not ours to control?”
Viago scoffs, almost. There is something halfhearted about it, like he wants to refute what she says, but only gets part of the way there. It doesn’t matter— she’s already picked apart the pieces of any argument he might make.
Years before the Dread Wolf aims to take down the Veil, Teia recruits a thief (an elf, a mage, a spark) from the gutters of Salle—and gets exactly what she bargained for.
(Or: no one has told the Crows of House Cantori that they are not the exception to every rule, and Viago wishes that someone would.)

Summary
The child is unexpected, not unwanted. Holding their fate in her hands, Arlow confronts the doubts that linger from her contract with the Veilguard.
"If we raise them, how can they be anything other than exactly what we are?" she whispers. Thinks of Viago's hand pushing her off the docks; of Caterina's cane; of blood and sweat and bile, and how every story ends in a scar.
"Are we such a terrible thing to be?"
"I don't know anymore." The admission falls too fast from her lips, escaping before she can swallow it back. "I hate that I don't know anymore."

Summary
Before a date, Vanthi worries her experience won't be up to par, and Rosamund offers her help with that.
There’s a beat where she regrets the offer. Where Vanthi’s lips part, just slightly, and she blinks. A beat before realization hits her like a druffalo and her eyes go wide. But just as Rosamund opens her mouth to laugh it off as a joke, Vanthi whirls around and grips her elbows.
“Truly? Would you? That would make me feel so much better, Rosa, if you don’t need to be anywhere else? I mean if you do, that’s okay, but if you don’t—?”
“No, no I don’t.” Her voice sounds distant, even to her own ears, the pounding of her heart in her throat too present, too loud. “I offered, didn’t I?”
