Summary
At some point during season 8 Etho disappeared, leaving behind a man too far gone for his best friend to realise it. Bdubs continues onto season 9 and builds his solitary monolith.
Today Bdubs leaves his home to a wonderful surprise:
There is a fox sleeping on his welcome mat. A very sad-looking white fox.(or Etho got cursed to be a fox, which, in true fairytale magic, is only broken by true love. Leading him to try and get Bdubs to admit his feelings through dreams and a warming new furry form.)

Summary
Grian forced himself up on his elbows, knees slick with mud. Something cloying stuck to the inside of his mouth, sickly sweet like rot, not exactly present in the way his other senses were present— it twisted like a memory of a fragrance, oily with associated emotions. Admin-level, coming from the parts of a player that meshed with a server and let the universe in.
The grass under his palms was rotten and mushy. He couldn't hear the ocean anymore.

“No, wait, slow down,” Impulse says, holding up a hand. “You found what?”
“A secret world!” Bdubs says, a little too loud. “Beneath Hermitcraft! Maybe beneath every server, I dunno!”
“Right,” Impulse says, dragging out the word. “And it’s full of… bird people?”
“Well—they’re kind of—they’re not exactly birds, per se, not like how Grian is a bird person, but they’re—they squawk!”
“Squawk.”
“Exactly!” Bdubs flails, nearly trips, and regains his balance with the most inelegant of hops. He puffs out his cheeks and pretends Impulse didn’t see. He definitely did. “And they—they wear masks of our faces! And they talk about us, like, all the time, in this super secret language! They watch everything we do!”---
In which Bdubs discovers Twitter, gets a makeover, makes some friends, experiences true love, and learns the secret of life, not necessarily in that order.

CLEO I didn't know poetry was used for repression. I'd have assumed it was the opposite.
JOE It is now. Because I say so. Up is down, left is right, moon's big, gravity doesn't exist, we're all going to die, poetry is for repression.
CLEO Interesting. I don't suppose poetry could also be for saving us from impending doom?
JOE I'm afraid not.
CLEO How pitiful.
JOE Yes. How pitiful.
People like to talk to process things. Whether to others, or themselves.
Likewise, at the end of the world, there is a lot of talking involved. Here is but a glimpse of it.

“You could not ban an interloper,” Gem suggested. “I mean, I’m-- I’m a cool person, I have skills.”
Grian narrowed his black eyes at her. Gem wished she could be less aware of his shadow and the ridiculous aura around him, that hint of take a step back that most public server admins wielded as more of a uniform than anything, but she couldn’t stop feeling her skin crawl.
She could feel the code access, if she focused on it. The server-level shifts that’d set her to adventure mode, and whatever had forcibly emptied her inventory on arrival so she didn’t have a single keepsake, so she didn’t even have her sweater.
Grian must’ve done that remotely, as soon as he learned she’d shown up.

Etho sniffs. “What’s with the chicken noodle soup treatment? Would’ve thought you’d be rubbing my face in your perfect health.”
“Yeah, well, a seizure’s a little different to getting the man flu every November.” There’s a ghost of an attempted laugh in Bdubs's voice, but it’s severely undercut by the obvious worry there too.
It has Etho snapping to attention. “A seizure? I don’t remember that.”

Etho loses four years of memories in a redstone accident. Which just so happens to include the entire length of his and Bdubs's relationship.

There’s a second when Bdubs thinks he won’t answer—he just looks at Bdubs, and his eyes go strangely crinkley around the corners. Then, he says, “Etho. I’m Etho, Bdubs.”

Bdubs has amnesia. But that's not going to stop him coming to some extremely rational conclusions about the state of his own heart.

The awkward kid standing in front of him has to be, what, twenty five? Twenty six, tops. Hardly a kid at all, really, but Jeez, does Bdubs ever feel like an old geezer looking at him.
“Etho?” he says experimentally.
The kid blinks over at him owlishly. “Bdubs?” he says and, yeah, that’s Etho’s voice alright. Quiet and unsure, and softer than it’s been in years, but definitely, definitely Etho.

As sculk contamination puts the future of Season 10 in doubt, the situation gets more complicated when an Etho from 2013 lands in the hermits' laps.
