Summary
Capt. Spaceboy is Captain of the Space Pirates, hence the name. Him and his crew travel the universe together, causing chaos along the way. Sounds amazing. "Derek. Wake up." The voice reaches him first, thinned by distance, as though it has had to pass through water to get there. Then the light follows, golden yellow and unforgiving where it spills through the apartment window and lays itself across his closed eyelids like a hand that will not let him go. His eyes open reluctantly and the ceiling above him is the wrong one, not because it is strange, but because the hairline crack from the smoke detector to the corner feels known in a way that makes his chest tighten before he can place why. Mind slow and viscous, he blinks at it. He knows the crack. Knows, too, the faint water stain near the vent and the way morning light catches in the uneven paint beside wall, turning old white into something tired and yellowed.
Then a face leans into view. Pale skin dusted with freckles. Bright green eyes that have looked at him thousands of times before. Auburn hair cut short, burning copper where the sun catches it.
In that moment, Derek forgets how to breathe and for that same span his mind gives him nothing until it does.
