Summary
She stared at his face, studying him. His expression was concealed, deep in thought, while he kept his gaze away.
Her own reports were waiting for her to complete them and sign them, but she couldn't focus with the tension in the room. Maybe not tension, something lighter, but colder too.
Something sad.
"You should have said yes."
Roy spoke, uncharacteristically soft. So he did in fact know about the conversation. Riza waited for him to add something more, but he didn't.
"I don't have time to date." She replied, measuring her words, as if a simple misstep could break the strange atmosphere surrounding them.
"Do I take too much of your time?"
"It's not that, Sir."

"Roy directed his gaze to the big glass clock that reigned the entrance of Central Command. Its metal hands were seconds away from its apex point. He crossed the room with idle steps, with the intention of asking for the contact information of another officer in relation to a case at the reception. They were not relevant, the name nor the address. It was about being at the right place at the right time with the most innocuous motive to go unnoticed, or at least not be seen as a threat.
It was risky, but it was important. Too important. For the mission. And for him. At this point it was even close to disrespectful to not admit it, at least to himself."
Or, after a late phone call with Riza, Roy suspects that something is wrong and he needs to see her. And although something is indeed wrong, Riza proves him once again she is not one easy to defeat.

Roy was staring at the ceiling from his hospital bed. At this point, he had memorized every little detail from the uneven texture of the faded white paint but he was glad for the alone time. According to his calculations, it should be around eight o'clock, based on how much time had passed since Havoc left for his therapy session and him not being back yet. He could fetch his watch to check, but he wasn’t sure of what drawer of the small nightstand it was in and it felt too much of a bother to search.
There were more troublesome matters occupying his mind. Too much had happened the previous night and he was still digesting it. The homunculus, the possible involvement of the Central Command, Havoc’s injury, Riza’s defeated words… They should be considering themselves lucky for making it out alive, all of them, but how could he truly believe that when one of his men had ended up paralized from the hips down and he nearly lost the other one?

"She didn’t realize just how sleep deprived she was until a couple of minutes of driving, with the soothing rumble of the engine and the soft tune of blues from the radio filling the otherwise quiet ride. Her lids were turning heavier and heavier, but as much as she wanted to, she couldn't allow herself to close her eyes, for she feared she would fall asleep the moment she did.
And she tried, she really tried. But they arrived at a red light and she blinked longer than she intended, and the next thing she knew was that her head was too heavy and that it was dropping to her shoulder without remedy. Exhaustion had taken control of her body and all she could do was to surrender to it."
Or Riza falls asleep on their ride home and Roy watches over her.

Riza tilted her head towards him, bringing them even closer. This was forbidden territory, part of him was still aware of that. But he was the weakest of the two of them, he had always been, and right now he needed her to remind him why they shouldn’t do this. He lifted his gaze to meet her eyes, those beautiful eloquent eyes that showed better than she could ever tell how she felt, to ask for permission.
And then, he knew.

Those words, spoken by Bokuto at seventeen, nineteen, twenty-two, had hurt enough to linger, timbre and pitch and intensity all burned into the worn-down edges of his memory: Akaashi, I’m seeing someone!
“Bokuto-san,” he said, his own voice hoarse and cracking. “I’ve been seeing someone.”
