Summary
Dr. Grace took one look at her, at the research dissertation that she had printed out several days earlier and marked front to back with questions, heard all of two of the minutes of the pitch she had on the sun eating alien-microbes, and all but abandoned his bag and notebooks in favor of climbing out of one of the many windows that his packed full of trinkets and diagrams his classroom had. The window made an awful clattering sound as it slammed closed once he’d fallen out of it and Eva had stood there, watching the bright yellow coat bob as Dr. Grace kept fleeing at a slightly above a brisk pace.

Summary
So. I’ve changed a few things for this to make sense.
1. The people on Earth didn’t disappear, they mostly fought each other after the sun began to dim noticeably
2. The stars didn’t disappear, but instead, they were eaten quickly by mutated astrophage
3. Simon went into space almost directly after Grace but before people started fighting, instead of growing up in space (I wanted to avoid uncomfortable age gaps)
Okay, now that that’s settled:
Grace was happy on Erid, but he was also bored, and he couldn’t help but wonder how other planets were surviving, so he and a few Eridians went out to see how other planets were fairing with astrophage, only to discover that it was now mainly targeting moons, and also forming communities around itself. ”Get to work Dr. Grace. The world is counting on you.”
Stratt turned around and with a wave of her hand another man had walked over, “You’ll be remaining here with Dr. Grace. I trust you can keep him out of trouble.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem.” The other man’s voice was smooth, and if Grace was hearing correctly it almost sounded like there was an undercurrent of mirth.
That’s when it clicked, was Stratt siccing a babysitter on him? “Hold on! What trouble are you thinking I'm going to get into?” Should he be offended? He was a grown man, he’d worked in countless labs before and sure he’d had some questionable outcomes but they’d just let him be the first scientist to study an alien life form! They should have more trust in him than this!
”Everyone in the world wants to get their hands on astrophage. Simon is here to protect you from them.” Stratt explained, turning again to give Grace an exasperated expression. “I should hope you don’t need constant supervision from yourself Dr. Grace.”
