It's the strangest coincidence that of all the people Kate could have spent the end of the world with, it's Yelena who is lying in the dust beside her.
“Are you scared?”
“Not really…,” Yelena says as if her hand didn't shake at all. “I had a lot of practice almost dying. You?”
Kate digs deep to be met with panic and fear and finds neither of it. There are worse things than dying while you get to hold hands with the girl you've been slowly falling in love with. Like having no one to hold hands with at all. So, no, Kate is not scared. The tingling sensation in her extremities and her dry mouth have another reason.

The gingerbread man on Kate’s green sweater is half-covered in flour, but infuriatingly, that only adds to the charm as she leads Yelena to a spot in the middle of the kitchen, bringing Yelena’s hands to her own shoulders before taking hold of Yelena’s waist, slowly guiding their bodies into an unsteady rhythm that Yelena supposes could be called dancing.
“Did you remember to get the first batch out of the oven?”
With a hum, Kate spins them both in place once, her eyes glinting. “Let me see… I can’t smell anything burning, so I think I did. I also put on the second batch just before you got back, and I even remembered to set the timer and everything. I did the dishes, too.”
“I am impressed, Kate Bishop,” Yelena deadpans. “All that and you didn’t need to use the fire extinguisher even once.”

That piqued Yelena's interest; she had gotten used to this life and wasn't looking forward to running from the American government just because Eleanor Bishop was being petty. "Fine, but if it involves boomerang arrows, I am walking away."
"We're in your bedroom. Where would you go?"
"To your place and leave you here. I would lock you out, too."
With a sigh, Kate finally turned to look at Yelena, her face more serious than Yelena had been expecting. "We could always get married."

“I don’t know,” Kate murmurs, and Yelena is bewildered to hear a faint echo in her own emptiness, coming from nearly six thousand kilometers away. “I just don’t really know what to do now, I guess. Clint says I’m the new Hawkeye, but that’s not official or anything. And even when it is, it’s going to be a lot of training. So I’m waiting to wait, or something, and — and I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this, actually.”
“Sometimes, it’s nice to just talk,” Yelena thinks and then says. “But I don’t think you should drop out of school, Kate Bishop. School is cool.”

It protects a painting just like public personas protect them. When it thins, truth shows through and the fragile question of whether it survives exposure.
Kate understands this intimately. She builds her life the same way she builds a canvas. Her vulnerability exists only in oils and linen, never in conversation. The world only sees saturation and brilliance. It does not see the underpainting she keeps correcting.

Hanahaki. The disease of unrequited love.
It seemed absolutely ludicrous - a disease so rare and so beyond reason that most people dismissed it as a hoax or sheer fiction. But in a world with aliens and wizards and magic gemstones that rewrite reality, maybe it wasn’t so far outside of the scope of possibility. It still seemed completely absurd though. Besides, she didn’t love Kate Bishop, right? Kate was her friend. One of the only real friends she’d ever had since Ohio, and the only current one outside of some of the freed Widows. And she wasn’t going to ruin that with something as stupid as love.
So no, unrequited love was a bullshit explanation. Unfortunately, it was also the only explanation she had, and even more unfortunately, it meant she was probably dying. Of lovesickness and flowers.
So not a cool way to die.

Yelena goes back for that drink with Kate Bishop and ends up developing feelings for her new friend. Feelings that cause her to start coughing up flowers, which is incredibly inconvenient.
