It’s a cloudy day. Grey and white stretch over the sky as far as the eye can see. Suguru has never known a more beautiful afternoon. The shape of Gojo is stark against the bland backdrop, throwing into contrast every line Suguru spends unreasonable amounts of time thinking about.
When they land on the gardens of Jujutsu High, Gojo smiles at him, hair windswept and cheeks pink, and says, “Let’s go eat something, Suguru. I’m starving.”
Suguru.
He’s never give much thought to his own name. Why would he? It’s a name just like any other. And yet, the way Gojo says it makes it sound special. It makes his soul sing in his chest. Gives him a reason to want to be better. More. Enough for Gojo, maybe.

Summary
Across the bridge, Suguru has walked almost half-way by the time he sees Satoru. He’s got a curse floating over him, stretched wide to cover him fully. A grotesque parody of an umbrella. Satoru huffs a laugh under his breath.
They stop where they are. Closer than they’ve been in too long, but still so far there’s no doubt about it. This is how things are now. How things must be.
Enemies.
Satoru should kill this man. He’s been given orders to execute on sight. You’d think, considering Satoru’s sight is one of the things that make him the strongest, that wouldn’t be too hard. But here he is again. Incapable of hurting the only person he’s ever trusted.

He watched the city skyline get farther and farther away. Neon advertisements painted the river in streaks of pink and blue, their reflections rippling across the water. A massive holo ad for The Commoner, flickered like it knew he was watching, the familiar slogan looping endlessly, “Everyone can become a hero.”
Lin Ling leaned against the panel, bag of convenience store snacks dangling from his fingers. “You don’t have anything to do tomorrow, right?”
“No. Why?” Nice glanced at him, suspicious.
“Wanna get high?” Lin Ling asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
His first thought was smoking. Gross. Ash. Tar. Cancer. Filth filling his lungs. Then Lin Ling tipped his hand, flashing the small, wrinkled plastic bag he’d confiscated earlier.
Nice’s chest tightened. “You’re kidding,” he said.
Lin Ling’s grin widened. “Do I look like I’m kidding?”

The place smells faintly of citrus and rain. It’s so painfully nostalgic, but Nice can’t pin it.
“Gege?”
The voice comes small and sure, the way children sound when they aren’t afraid of the world yet.
Nice turns. A boy stands a few feet away, barefoot on the packed dirt. His hair is brown, unevenly cut, one side longer than the other, messy sun caught strands falling over a round, chubby face still a little flushed from running.
He’s missing one of his front teeth, along the bottom. His shirt is too big, sleeves rolled to his elbows, the yellow collar stained with something that might be some kind of juice.
For a second, Nice forgets how to breathe. The boy blinks at him with those wide, brown eyes, familiar in a way that claws at his chest. “Gege, are you okay? You look…” He tilts his head, searching for the word. “Hurt.”

His shirt is still on, buttons half undone and clinging to one shoulder, and Nice feels the frustration rise, the need to pause, to strip properly, to fold things the right way, and then Lin Ling grabs his hand and drags it under his shirt, over his chest, over the quick, uneven thump of his heart, and says in a breathless murmur, “Touch me here. Like you mean it.”
Nice’s world narrows to the skin under his palm. Hot. Bare. Imperfect.
