Kit almost laughs under her breath. How does he expect to force her to?
“Suppose it would be hard to run with an empty tank,” he continues as if he read her thoughts. “But I’m not cruel. If my daughter was stupid enough to find herself in a situation like you, I’d want someone to take pity on her, too.”
Kit resists the offended glare she so wants to shoot him, settling for an eyebrow raise that she’s certain conveys just the right amount of snark. She doesn’t want to shoot herself in the foot when she’s this close to a warm bed. And a shower.
“The inn is about a 3/4 mile walk up the hill. Can’t miss it; just head left out of here and you’ll come across it in no time,” he explains. “My wife should be there. If not her, then her sister is.”

Kit didn’t look up. And Jade didn’t say anything. She sat at the foot of the bed, not wanting to push the princess into doing or saying anything she didn’t want to. After a few moments of restless silence, Kit slowly sat up, rotating her position on the bed, bringing the vest and blankets along with her. She shifted towards Jade before settling her head in the stablehand’s lap. Jade looked down at the girl and wasn’t surprised to see her eyes glinting in the sunlight peeking through the shutters. As the light caught her eyes, Jade noticed them shimmering with unshed tears. Again, not wanting to say the wrong thing, Jade settled for reaching her hand down to Kit’s. She laid hers atop Kit’s smaller hand before the princess flipped hers over and laced their fingers together. She felt the girl take a deep breath, hints of shakes rippling down her back before she exhaled slowly and heavily. Jade rubbed her thumb along the knuckle of Kit’s and the girl squeezed tighter in response.

Before her brain even registered Kit falling into the poison, her legs rushed her, faster than she’s ever moved, to the fast-closing hole. Desperately hammering at the surface with her (Ballantine’s) sword, she finally felt the emotions bubble up. The next moments happened somehow in a blur yet painfully slow. Each millisecond Kit was in the liquid and not in her arms felt like years. She hates feeling scared but hates feeling useless even more. Both consumed her as she watched the blurry figure sink deeper and further. She pleads, with Elora, with Willow, and with Kit, desperately needing this to end.
