In March of 2003, engineers at Research In Motion performed a successful preliminary test of a revolutionary new instant messaging software they dubbed BlackBerry Messenger. This beta version quickly became the communication tool of choice among RIM employees, with nearly 150,000 messages passing through the system internally before BBM officially launched to the public in August of 2004.
