The villagers' attention has turned from him, fixed on something out beyond his back, and the priest waves his carved staff of coral and pearl, chanting prayers for the god to look favorably upon their sacrifice, to return the fisheries to their plenty. Several of the women cover their mouths, their eyes rolling and white.
